Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I've got loads of pedals and racks, but most of the time, there is nothing as nice as just plugging straight into nothing else other than an all valve amp and having a good ol' rock, with the odd tea break!

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

modulations are a bit lame, cos u can only really use them once or twice in a set, cos it sounds a bit lame to have flange in every song!!!

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

For leads and rhythm I usually use a bit of delay and some reverb, anything more than that screws with the tone IMO.

Though I do a lot of ambient/drone music with guitar as a sound source and that uses some chorus and compression as well...

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I've been using my Jem into JSX for ages now and would love some quality pedals, i've just sold a guitar and am thinking of getting the following as a start:

Jim Dunlop Cry Baby
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man
Electro Harmonix Stereo Polychorus
Keeley Compressor

That'd be me sorted I want an Electro Harmonix Metallic Mistress aswell but the above is gonna be good for a grounding of important effects.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I'm usually a big detractor of digital modulation effects. That being said, I don't think I'll ever part with my Line6 MM-4 modulation modeler. 4 presets allow me to have a chorus for clean chimey chords, a flanger that I use for a song or 2, a Leslie rotating speaker effect and a nice pulsating tremelo that I use at least once in our set. I don't think I'd use it for serious studio recording, but for stage work, I haven't found anything even close to this good.

HAM->Crybaby->GSP2101->JCM900 (4101, using just the powersection)

and I use everything imaginable from the 2101, if I feel the need...pitch shifted reverbs, modulated delays, panned flangers, everything.

Yea I've got a 4100 and 2100 SL-X, great amps to rock with.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I think the underlying issue here is doing WHATEVER it takes to find the tone you're looking for. In my cover band, we play everything from Nickelback to SRV to Stevie Wonder. I use a Marshall JFX, JMP, and a Dual Monobloc 50/50 amp. I ALSO use the Boss Gigadelay (KILLER pedal), the DF-7 dist, Dunlop Wah, and a Roland Guitar Synth (midi rig). I think with all the options, my rig gives me a great array of different sounds. To make a long story even longer, I think if you're doing mostly covers, you're sort of forced into needing MANY different types of guitar tone.

NOW, when I'm writing/ recording, I go to the other extreme and keep it simple. I use a Vai/ Legacy head with the DF-7, Boss Gigadelay, Boss chorus, and the Dunlop Wah.

Obviously, the guitar and types of pickups used will also affect your sound and they should be considered.

I think the use of ANY effect should be done in moderation and the BEST tones you get will come from the refinement of your playng. IMHO

I know several of you old school guys/ purists like to keep it all to a minimum. GREAT concept in theory. However, not possible if you're doing mostly covers. (IMHO)

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I only use a TC G-Force. Not much need for much else, occassionally I use a Bad Horsie Wah for those special moments.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

modified true bypass wah in front. TC Gmajor(very non tone sucking) in the FX loop of my Mesa. that's all i need.

Gmajor has the best reverbs i've ever heard in person in my life. i will never use amp reverb in my main rig again. the delays are sweet too and plenty of modulation FX for whenever.

Gmajor=SEX=quality

why ever not have FX? even just some sweet reverbs and delays, compression, maybe EQ, can allow you to have album/movie quality pro sound
it's not all about you, it's about the listeners too
