General Question about Power Amp and Pre amp selection

Hello everyone...I am trying to see which power amp I should use in order to get an 80's metal tone. I am using an ADA MP-1 preamp...I have read that you should match an MP-1 with a solid state power that correct? I am trying to get an 80's metal tone here...whitesnake, poison, van halen, Dokken, you get the idea...If not, what Power amp should I match my ADA MP-1 with? I have played it through a Peavey classic 50/50 before and it was fine...but I am interested in hearing your guys' opinions about the difference between using my tube preamp with a solid state power amp or a tube power amp..Thanks in advance everyone.

Re: General Question about Power Amp and Pre amp selection

a tube power amp is going to be a bit louder based on same wattage. I've always estimated about 3 times louder, but it differs based on many things. A tube will sound a bit meatier and raw than a solid state. I've always noticed a bit fatter tone with tube power while SS is a bit thin with no depth. Another advantage to tube power is that when rolling back the volume on your guitar (assuming a distorted channel is in use), you'll start to get a bluesier, less gainy distortion, but won't lose a whole lot of volume until your guitar is almost completely at 0, where as with SS, once you start rolling off, the tone kind of just dies. It's hard to describe that without actually comparing them side by side. This is certainly just my experience with the two with my setups. Other people may have different experiences. I would go with a tube preamp, and not just because you are interested in the Mesa 50/50 i have. For that kind of 80's metal you may be better suited with a EL34 based power amp than a 6L6.
