Good halfstack combo for under $800?

Can anybody list off a few half stack combos for under $800? I've been reading some Harmony-Central reviews and they've totally been bashing on Marshall and Randall, etc. I know Bogner and Mesa are excellent amps, but finding a head and a cabinet package for even under $1500 is a real steal...

So shout out some ideas. I play everything. And I mean every genre music out there that uses a guitar [I guess I could try techno on a guitar...].

Well. Actually the randall half stacks are really good straight solid state amps, most of the reviews over at harmony central are from people who expect the amp to play itself who have never even played out of a good tube amp. My suggestion for you is either randall, marshall mg series, or line 6 spider. Dont get the line 6 cabinet though it sucks. Get a randall or marshall cab to go with it.

Re: Good halfstack combo for under $800?

well i am no fan of marshall , randalls have a bad rep for having some quality control issuse , they sound good if you get one that works .

800 on a combo or stack is pretty good , there are a lot of amps out there for that or under .

mesa .50 or .30 caliber combos , maybe a dc-5 or 3 combo . Carvin mts head or combo , legacy combo , used laney gh100L head.

there are quite a few amp recommendation threads , try a forum search and see what you pull up .

Carvin SX stack, $600. Or $500 w/ a 2x12. Or you can get the head($280) and an Avatar cab.

Assuming you want a new half stack. A used combo would be much better though, like the person above me mentioned. Mesa, Laney, and Carvin tube combos are great.

As I've said before, my Carvin X-100B was under 600 used, and it was minty minty (still is). She'll move some crazy air, too

Yeah I'm open to used and new. I do realize that $800 is actually a truckload of money for a head/cab. Hmm...

Just the head or the cab too? Because they got an X-100B on the Bay for $350

Anybody who lives in CT wanna go pick up this for me?

Oh yeah. And I also want a tube. But I'm assuming most $500 heads are tubes...

Re: Good halfstack combo for under $800?

The older, black tolex covered X-100B is apparently better than the newer, grey carpet covered one. I think the older one uses 6L6 valves, whereas the newer one uses EL34. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I picked up my Peavey 5150 Combo for $500 on evilbay. It's capable of some great hotrodded marshall tones, "brown" tones, and a pretty Vai-like sound too.

AKMG, check out 300010750700 on the bay. I don't know if the price will stay there or not, but it is in your price range right now.

Ooo thanks Bonehead. I doubt it will get any more expensive, but I'll wait it out

Re: Good halfstack combo for under $800?

I have the tolex covered 6L6 head, and got it with the 4x12 Celestion cabinet for $560 total.
You can see it here behind my son Seamus. Great amp!
