Good mics for micing guitar cabs? (aside from the SM57)

My SM57 recently died (eek!) for no apparent reason. I always liked the sound of it, but wondered what mics everybody here is using with guitar cabs? Just want to make sure I'm not "missing out" on anything good!

It really depends on what your budget is. The 57 and 58 have their good qualities. I have tried several different combo's to get different sounds.
I have found that the best combination that gets a real cabinet sound is this:
Sure SM94 in front of the first speaker in the cabinet
Neuman U87 inside the cabinet
and a AT 3035 about 3 feet away, in front of the cabinet.

If you are looking for a great single mic setup, get the SM94. It does a great job of reproducing the actual tone of your amp, and it's only about $150.
Hope this helps.

The Audix OM-2 had been highly recommended to me over the SM 57 58 line stuff..
For price its a great buy.....

I havent bought one as of yet tho so I have no experiance with them..
Just did a bit of reesearch for myself....

I like running either My Audix OM-5 or my AT4033-sm ( Audio Technica )
I want to try doing a dual mic test and see how the blend of the 2 works out. In all seriousness, I would suggest trying anything you get your hands on, you never know what may work in various situations.

The second most popular guitar-speaker mic is probably the Sennheiser MD-421. It has a beefier tone than the 57, but not as much cut. Good alternative sound, but it's quite expensive. I've heard that the Audix OM-2 is really good, but I've never used it myself. I've used the Sennheiser Evolution series (is that what it's called?), the flat one that sits flush against the grillcloth, and that sounded great on a Recto cab. AKG C1000 will give you lots of treble and sizzle. Not a bad mic, especially if you have a dark sounding amp/speaker.

Personal prefs:

Sennheiser 421
Royer 121

Into either a Great River MP2-NV or an API 3124MB mic pre

Sidenote: I cannot stand the mics Neumann has been producing lately. That company has turned into merely a shell of it's former self. I strongly suggest checking out Soundelux, Lawson, or Manely mics instead.
