head cab and ohm question

Hey guys i gotta noob question about cabs heads and ohms.So I'm looking at getting my first half stack and I really have no clue on how to tell what heads can be used on what cabs.Obviously a head and cab that are both 8 ohm can be used together, but what if the head is 8 ohm and the cab is 12 ohm? would the thing set fire or something? And lets say it was the other way around and the head had higher ohm then the cab then what would happen? Its a noob question but I'm sure you have all bin in my shoes before.I just want to make sure I understand this before I spend money on a head and a cab that could end up causing a fire or something.

Re: head cab and ohm question

Cab has to be the same or higher value than the head.
Never lower
And there are specific cables to connect a cab to a head hence the fact those cables carry current.
My guess is they're called speaker cables in english.

Re: head cab and ohm question

Exactly, and from my understanding, if you do run said setup you can overheat the amp causing damage to the tubes and/or circuitry, no explosion though

Re: head cab and ohm question

What happens is you burn the output transformer up which will cost you some serious bucks to replace. Avoid mismatching and you avoid the fireworks. And NEVER run your amp without a load connected.
