Help deciding on PC Interface

Trying to decide on a recording interface.
open to any and all suggestions, with explanation why you recomend it.

Currently I use 1 of 2 16/24-bit interfaces
Digitech GNX3000, and/or Digitech GNX4
They work great, but....
I want to use both in the mix to looper, but it doesnt allow that way.

My first choice is PCI, I have 2 really good PCI cards,
a Hercules Game Theater XP, and a X-Fi Fatality Champion Series with I/O
However: my laptop does have PCI, and my desktop has 3 GTX285's so I cant access my 2 PCI slots.

Now my question is Firewire/1394a/b versus usb.
My laptop is an HP DV6-2155 Core i3. ICH10 chipset which does not have a firewire port, so I will need an Expresscard 54/34 for firewire.

USB I have alot USB devices, GNX3000/GNX4, JamMan Looper, Mouse, etc.. which may cause latency issues. Firewire is independent of chipset, and CPU.

I have heard that the express cards are actually slower then an onboard Texas Instruments Firewire chip.

With all that said. USB or Firewire?

Thanks for participating in my interface search

Re: Help deciding on PC Interface

I'm considering
- Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 firewire
- Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 firewire
- M-audio several usb/firewire

Software is a plus, some have differnet versions.

Re: Help deciding on PC Interface

I have no latency issues with USB interfaces. Regardless of chip set, USB 2.0 has about the same transfer rate as FireWire.
I use a Yamaha Audiogram for just jamming and a USB 16 channel mixer for other stuff. No issues yet.
Go with whichever one has the features you need.

I actually have been considering the audiogram, I have yamaha 10/2 channel mixer I thought about doing that very same thing.

After researching the latency issues, of have a lot of audio going into usb people say it craps out..

I get errors on my GNX4 using Cubase Ai4, but IDK if thats issue.
I think maybe my problem is I use a looper to get my rythms, then dub to PC. However, if the firewire expresscards are crappy, IDK if they will be better then USB. I really hate to 86 one of my GTX285s.

Re: Help deciding on PC Interface

I went with the Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 Firewire.
I researched the firewire USB, and read the whole Wikipedia on both USB and Firewire.

Firewire is great, people just use it wrong.
It's actually faster, and better then USB2.0 when used properly.

1. Make sure you have a Texas Instruments Firewire 1394 chip in your pc, expresscard, or PCI card.

2. Using the correct port, 4-pin, 6-pin, 9-pin.
usually the powered 6-pin.

Anyway, hope this info finds its way to someone who finds it useful,
I will get mine in about 3 days, I'll post an update here as well as my blog.
http://wwguitar.com where I wrote an entire story about this...

cheers...
