Help: Delay in Monitoring through my PC Recording Setup!!

Ok, I don't know jack about all this but here it goes...

I've got a nice Dell P4 1.8 GHz, blah blah running Sonar 2 and using a Audiophile 24/96 card. When I monitor what I am actually recording, there is a very very noticable delay in what the PC is seeing and recording. This makes multi tracking impossible because I can't listen to the original track and play along in real time. It used to run just fine but all of the sudden it starts doing this. I'm afraid my kid may have messed with something and now I can't find the fix. I've tinkered with everything I can find within the soundcard settings and can't get it to go away.

Any clues???? If so, please explain them as if you were describing it to a two year old....I'm not fluent in this area at all.

Open Sonar, then open a project.
Go to the options menu then, audio, under the general tab, there is a slider that controls the buffer settings. The more to the left the lower your latency, the more to the right, the more tracks you can listen to while recording.
Your best bet is to experiment with the settings and see what works best for you. Start there and see what that does for you.

Oh yeah, the other thing. Go to input monitoring, and de-select the soundcard that you're monitoring from. That will cause a latency that will drive you nuts. Just goto your line in input on your windows mixer and turn that up so you can monitor real time without taxing your PC
