Lightbulb Help me bring the volume up!

My problem: I have a hard time bringing the tracks i record up to a decent volume when compared to the volumes of an ordinary CD-track. I don't want to go as loud as Death Magnetic or Californication, but I'd like to not hear a significant drop in volume when going from a random track to my track. I really don't know why my tracks turn out this silent, because the volume on the master fader is mostly high (often almost clipping). I use compressor on some of the tracks to bring up the volume and keep it consistent. I use ProTools LE 7.3 for reference.

Do you guys have some kind of method to mixing and bringing up the volume? I want to learn as much as possible as I'm quite new to recording and mixing.

Thanks!

Re: Help me bring the volume up!

I use a MBox2, Sm57 and Sennheiser 906 as well as DI with my keyboard. I'm not 100% sure what you mean with input volume (how much volume the mics record?). I always adjust the gain to get most volume possible without any clipping. Hope that clears anything up. The problem is probably that I don't know how to mix and bring up the volume properly, but I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks!

Re: Help me bring the volume up!

you need a brick wall limiter like the waves L2. it is a severe compressor that keeps your level as hot as possible without clipping. get a good mix then use the limiter to get it hot. don't mix too much into the limiter or your mix will lose life and be nothing but loud.
