how many speakers?

ok, everyone here has got an amp. how many speakers does your amp have?
is there any obvious advantage in haveing one two or four speakers as your output? when in live situations, most people seem to only mic one speaker of their amp up to the pa, is there any point in haveing more than one speaker, when it is cheeper, lighter and smaller to only have one?
your views?
thanks

Re: how many speakers?

4x12 cabinets look cool but are a pain to lug around as well.

I have 2 4x12 cabs, a 2x12 Vox AC30 and a 1x12 Marshall Studio 15.

Re: how many speakers?

Or you could be stupid (IMO) and get that marshall 2x12 (handwired series) that's the size of a 4x12.

Re: how many speakers?

More speakers means you can go louder. That doesn't necessarily mean if you add more speakers under your head it will be louder, because you split the power of the head between the speakers. I have a 4x12 and it is definately much clearer than my 1x12, probably because the 1x12 is overpowered and it makes it sound like a cardboard box.

Re: how many speakers?

i use a 4x10"

i like it more than 2x12" because it makes the amp taller, and the controls are therefore easier to reach!

Re: how many speakers?

more speakers = more air moved.... simple as that.
1 speaker can be just as "loud" as 4 but it won't sound as BIG.
A 4x12 will fill a room with sound without having to be deafeningly loud whereas a 1x12 will have to be louder to cut through.
So the question is: do you wanna sound louder or bigger???

depends on the cabs really.. i have 2 1x12 partial open backs and i played with a kid that had a Marshall 1960A cab, and I honestly thought my rig sounded much bigger than his. I think it really depends on which cabs you get just as much as how many speakers are in them. may not be true always, but thats been my experience so far
