I need a new amp.

Hi,

Sorry about another what amp to buy thread but I could do with some of the expert opinions only found here.

I am after a high gain head, but I want a used one. I haven't had any luck finding a used one, where are good places to find used gear in the UK?

I am considering a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier, 5150 or even a Line 6. I would like a small high end 2x12 or 1x12 (Mesa if I am lucky) for practicing and later a cheapish 4x12 for my band or even another 2x12.

I have seen a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier Rectoverb Head on an auction site with a 1x12 which looks very nice. Whats the difference compared to a Single Rectifier mk2? I was really hoping for the standard version. Also it risky buying used amps from auction sites?

Your opinons are always appreciated.
Thanks

I'm going to root for the 5150! The other guitar player in my band got one just recently, and it's just a great amp. PLENTY of gain! The amp doesn't have a dedicated clean channel, which sucks, or individual EQ's for both channels, but it sounds so good. The closest i could compare it to would be the tone on Meshuggah's 'Nothing', only brighter and tighter. Oh yeah, he's got the 2X12 combo, and it's extremely freaking loud!
Hope this helps!

Try to get your hands on an Engl Savage, Savage SE, or Powerball! They kick the sh** out of any Mesa, Marshall, Diezel(!), Rivera, etc., that I've tried, and I tried out a lot before settling on the Savage SE. I even thought it was better then the Diezel VH4, and cost was not an issue.

Really, before settling on a well-known amp, do yourself a favor and try one if you can. You won't be disappointed. www.engl-amps.com

Yeah have heard good things about them. The only problem is I can't get one used. Ebay seems to be the best option at the moment to get good used gear.

Meshuggah rule, I do prefer Chaosphere's tone TBH. I had the 5150 combo for a week but didn't like it although I suspect the values may have needed replacing.
