Unless you are playing outdoors, slants are no doubt the way to go. The project the sound out but a the presence up at you too, so in a large room (not huge but as large as any of us have in our houses) or smaller, slants are the best. Straight cabinets just project the sound straight out, which serves as 4 extra speakers on the bottom of a stack (hence the name bottom cabinet) or for a huge room or outdoors where you are trying to project the sound as far straight out as possible.

I had 2 identical cabinets, one was straight and one was a slant. Rarely even used the straight cabinet, and when I did it was in a full stack setup, never alone!

Hope that answered your question

Thanks a lot, I've just heard some guys talking about tonal differences of them in a music store once. Now I know they knew crap about what they were talking about and I guess it's better I've only played slanted cabs.

yeah it is mostly just a percieved difference. You will hear a bit moreof the mids and highs with a slant cab because it's pointed up towards you. Besides that they produce a very similar sound. A slanted cab usually serves better by its self then a bottom cab.

Re: I've only played on Slanted Cabs, missing out?

^^ What he said if I didn't say it well enough.

Think of it this way - in a small room, the open back combo a couple feet from a wall usually sounds the best. The sound projects out slightly but enough for the room, and up and all around as the back is open.

In a larger room with a closed back slant cab, the sound gets thrown out and slightly up too so it is thrown all around, so you hear more highs and mids. Unless you are outdoors or in a massive room, with a straight cabinet the highs and mids appear to get lost at ear level where they don't in a slant cab. If you like a muffled sound that appears to have more bass, you might like a straight cabinet - I know some people prefer them for that reason!
