Jason was never known for his amazing tone, I never liked it until the DLR album. The older recordings sounds like a cheapo distortion box into a solid state amp, drowned with typical 80's reverb.
The playing on the other hand was utterly brilliant.
Indeed, Jason Becker is widely known for his abilities (mainly arpeggio fluency), but not for his tone.
I'd say there was simply not enough time for he develop his tone as he could.
