Live Microphone volume & feedback

Hi all,

I have to admit quite a bit of ignorance on this topic. I've been singing for like a year and a half now and still don't know how to properly amplify my voice. For recording I've used a MXL 990 and a behringer tube pre. But live I seem to run into two problems:

1) Hearing myself in the mix
2) Preventing feedback

During practice I run the MXL 990 into the tube pre then into a roland keyboard cube amp that is facing the band. For playing out we always borrow another, bigger amp and face it at the audience, or place the roland behind us.

This setup works ok, but I have to strain my voice somewhat to be loud enough. If we turn the volume up, feedback death.

I tried using Ibanez instrumentation mics and the cheapie mics that came with the mic stands i got from MF, but they don't seem to be eq'd like the condenser. Though we can turn the volume up louder with them, it's actually harder to hear me in the mix. Grr.

The only setup I have used that worked well was one I borrowed last year for a few hours. Absolutely gigantic cabs, the larger pair facing the audience, the smaller pair facing us, and a microphone whose brand I forget.

The drummer commented it was the first time "we've been able to hear ourselves while playing, I think."

Hearing anything near the drumset, much less sitting on the throne, seems to be a continual problem.

Any thoughts?
