Locking tuners for Jackson JS Kelly

Hey guys,
I've got a Jackson JS Kelly and I need to change the tuners from jacksons original tuners to locking tuners as the original ones doesn't stay in tune for more than one chord.
What do I need to look for when buying new tuners? Is there any brand that is a direct fit?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Locking tuners for Jackson JS Kelly

Are you sure it is the tuners and not something like the nut sticking? I'd try lubing the nut with chap stick first to see if that helps.

You will need to measure the holes the tuners fit through. I think most fit, but it doesn't hurt to know.

Also some locking tuners have a little stud that needs a hole drilling in the head stock so they can't slip round. Some tuners already have a screw in roughly that position, others don't.

Basically if you are prepared to do some drilling and possibly filling, most locking tuners will fit. I personally use Sperzels, I have noticed a marginal improvement in the tone and sustain with them over normal tuners.

Re: Locking tuners for Jackson JS Kelly

What kind of Kelly is it? If it has a locking nut, there's no valid reason to put locking tuners in there, as the nut keeps the strings locked, regardless of what the tuners are doing.

Can you post a pic of the tuners that are currently in your guitar? Based on the design of the tuner, you might look at the manufacturer that makes a tuner closest to what's in there already, so you don't have to do as much work when replacing them (enlarging holes, drilling additional holes, etc.)

I hope this helps.

i know Planet Waves are f**king awesome. but like jb4674 said, if theres a locking nut, the problem is the trem. in which case get a black OFR and a new black OFR nut. those guitars look like crap with chrome hardware anyway (but i think every guitar does so what do i know?)

Hey,

There's no locking system on the guitar (see image; http://bothners.co.za/wp-content/upl...js30_kelly.jpg )

Can you post a picture of the back of the headstock? I'd like to see what the tuners look like.

Hey Jimmy. They are identical to these;

Model Jin-Ho R3

I've gone ahead and ordered these;

Schaller M6L locking. From what I've understood they should fit pretty much excactly.

Those were the ones I had in mind

Great choice! You'll enjoy the locking mechanism.

Thanks I look forward to trying them out as I've never used other than stock machine heads before.

I noticed a positive effect on the tone and clarity as well as slightly better sustain. It is all marginal but it was definitely palpable.

Re: Locking tuners for Jackson JS Kelly

I got the tuners this morning but sadly the shaft was too short as the headstock is too thick for the tuners. It turns out I need the XL version (21 mm).

The Schaller tuners are heavier than the originals, so I might have to redrill my strap pin to maintain a somewhat decent balance on my guitar.

Re: Locking tuners for Jackson JS Kelly

You checked everything else before you decided it's the tuners, I hope.

Usually fixed bridge guitars will stay in decent tune unless the tuners are slipping, or something else is loose.

Re: Locking tuners for Jackson JS Kelly

I can't say for sure but I'm quite sure it's the tuners. Once the right tuners are in place we will see
