Marshall Power Break or THD Hotplate?

Hey guys, thinking of getting an attenuator (or ear plugs, but the attenuator is more fun, right?), so which one for my Marshalls, the Marshall powerbreak or THD hotplate? What do you rockers think?

I had a powerbrake and would never buy another one, it just killed the tone of my 1959 SLP. I don't know that the Marshall one would be any better though.

I've always been pretty happy with my marshall powerbreak (used with a Marshall 6100), but I have heard that the hotplate is better.

I had the THD Hotplate. I have heard that any kind of attenuator is bad for the transformer, but I'm not sure why, maybe something you want to look into.

Dunno, as far as I'm aware, an attenuator is a matched load just like the speakers are. Shouldn't affect the transformer at all really. You will go through valves quicker, of course, as the reason is to drive them harder.

They are in no way bad for amps, though by being able to push them harder you will wear the valves out a bit quicker.

Re: Marshall Power Break or THD Hotplate?

You should know this about the Power Break. Notice how I spelled Break (not Brake as it is supposed to be). They claim they will handle 100 watts. They really only handle about 70. Use it with a 100 watt head, and the head is going to the shop a lot more than it should.

Hot plates will handle up to 185 watts and are a huge step up.

That is what the manufacturers claim. However, it is not true.

If you want proof, plug a Marshall Major into a pair of hotplates and watch it burn. Do not plug it into the hotplates, and it wont have any problems unless you are boosting the input a lot.

Isn't a major above 100w though?

The THD Hotplate is way better then the Marshall one. Let your ears decide if you think the Weber Mass is better. I know for a fact that the build quality of THD is excellent (I own a Flexi 50, but no Hotplate, yet).

That is why I said 2 of them. Hotplates also support up to 185 watts (Majors are officially rated at 200, but put out less. Mine puts out 159 before clipping, and with Gold Lions you can push that up to 175).
