new amp (ashdown fallen angel)

Just got an new amp yesterday. its the ashdown FA60 all tube head. its great cause its the first amp i have owned that can really do a 7 string justice while keeping my Jem sounding as awesome as always. i just need to find a decent cabinet for it now cause the one i am using is older than me and is only rated at 30 watts so i have to go easy with it.

one question about cabinets. i know that the impedance i select on the head must match the rating of the cabinet but what i want to know is, do different impedances have different tonal properties?

heres some pics for ye

Re: new amp (ashdown fallen angel)

SWEEEET !!!

Those are GREAT amps. Regarding impedance matching:

16 ohm cab = 16 ohm head output....BUT if using TWO 16 ohm cabs the output impedance goes to 8 ohms.

By mis-matching ohmages from head to cab you run the risk of overheating your power stage and clipping - which sends a square wave out and can blow speakers. This doesn't happen right away - but best to read the book and do what Ashdown recommends - it's very much like a Marshall valve head.

You have a big-league amp so learn all you can about it - take care of it - and you'll be rewarded with audiophile tones for a long time ;^)

Do I even WANT to know the price tag on that bad boy? Sick looking amp though, love the old school gauge.

Man, that's truly an ear thing, everyone hears it differently.

To me, 16 ohm sounds really open and cuts, 8 ohm is a little smoother, and 4 smoothes it out even more. But I've never played through an ashdown, and your perspective may be totally different than mine anyway.

Got any place you can take it and play through some diff cabs?

Re: new amp (ashdown fallen angel)

Sweet, that is awesome! Makes me kinda want one after seeing that...

Anyway, I love the sound of Ashdown amps. Gives a great thump with nice crystal highs, with perfect (but not scooped) mids. I wonder how that would sound in a guitar rig combined with a 4x12 cabinet... maybe a Fender?

Re: new amp (ashdown fallen angel)

its an awsome amp, i tried it yesterday and i want it so so much but i get a stratocaster on Friday and i haven't money, i found iti with the 4x12 cam for 950E (good price for Greece) and its my ideal amp, last month i played about 10-15 amp heads (all tube) peavey, marshall, engl, framus, mesa etc, and fallen angel is the ultimate amp for me, perfect sound on both chanels, perfect overdrive, but ashdown dont make them anymore, the new FAs are from hayden or something...
