New amp UK £300-400 epi vj or other stock

Hey guys,

I just bought an Ibanez RG550 20th aniversary model guitar in desert yellow

im now in dire need of a new amp, i currently using a Marshall MG (i know, i know )

im willing to spend upto around £300-400

Ive just turned 18 and have been playing for a yearish, Im still discovering myself musically etc, so i want something all round, ranging from nice quiet jivey stuff, upto crunchy metallica esque,

Im gonna be going to university and staying in dorms where they dont appreciate high volumes, so i need something that holds out at low volume levels. I wont be gigging or playing on stage etc. So just a bedroom practice amp.

Ive seen abit about the Valve junior and all the mods etc and think i would quite enjoy doing the modding etc, im quite proficent at soldering etc, i was thinking about getting the amp head and finding a good speaker cabinet? I am willing to put the time in to read up about all the details etc,

OR

Is there some other amp in the price range that will pretty much do everything i want from stock or with a pedal or 2.

The main problem i think i may have with the whole valve scene, espcially when it would come to the vj modding, is that i dont really know what i want. Ie mods described as "marshall esque" "fender esque" etc?

So what are your thoughts, do i go for a Valve junior and mod it? if so what speaker cabinet should i get? or should i get the combo amp?

Should i get some other valve amp? ive heard quite abit about the Laney VC15/30

ive tried to be as detailed as possible because ive seen how inspecific some people are lol

Any help/details/ideas are much appreciated

check out Sound Control

They have VJ's but badged under the name "Grainger" - £79 for the combo
I bought one - they're GREAT!

They do a head too for versatility......

Mesa costs like twice as much in the UK, go Laney. Valve juniors can be fun, but I don't know if you'd want one as you're main amp

£400 will get you a gh50L head
another £200 for a nice cab and you really wont need to swap.

If you've got £300-£400 budget for a practice amp how about a 2nd hand Cornford Harlequin?

2 have been recently up for sale on the bay for bang on your price range and you may just get 1 for around the same price, if you're lucky!!

they're only 6 watts and I'm sure they'll hold their value for re sale purposes better than any cheap and nasty budget combo

If I could persuade her indoors to let me blow that figure on an amp I'd defo get one...
