New Old Amp Day

On the weekend I was helping a mate clear out his garage. Under a pile of junk, crap and dust I spottes some shiney black tolex.. I started digging.

Someone had left it here cos it didn't work, I was told. I asked if i could take it... yes i could.

So after 5 or so years of no use, and lord knows what living in it, I plugged it in expecting it to either fry in front of me, or not work at all... to my suprise 2 12AX7's & 4 EL34's lit up. I plugged in my Slash LP, turned up to 8 and was in 70's heaven... not to mention a little bit deaf.

This is a handmade (made by Mick Samson in Newcastle Australia), seemingly original, mid 70's Baez Master Volume.

Based on and comparable to the JTM 45. People who know these things suggest they may even be better than their Marshall counterpart. Beautifully simple, warm and powerful.

I'm thinking either a Tube Screamer or a Fulltone OCD to give it some oomf. Any other suggestions?

Man I wish I could have a find like that! Congratulations.

I'd be getting the capacitors replaced soon if possible. They are probably mostly on their last legs if the amp is that old.

Re: New Old Amp Day

I'm gonna get her a check up in the next few weeks but I'm in total awe of this.

I got her up to 10 yesterday... through a single 12" 75w Celestion... at rehearsal and I went slightly week in the knees. The raw "Malcolmness" of it was very impresive. We have a new bass player who's 20 odd years younger than me.. he went screaming for the earplugs.. the rest of us deaf old buggers lapped it up.

For normal volume I ended up getting a Vox Satchurator which gives a really nice rounded (as opposed to the DS 1 having a really bitey.. almost choppy) distortion.

It's a corker of a mini stack, I'm guessing 50w, fits easily in the boot and does the business.

When the missus heads out this arvo I might have to crank it again and post a video for those that care about these things.
