Old smelly MKIIC+???

Hi,

I've recently had the opportunity to test drive a MKIIC+ before considering a purchase.

It sounds pretty good, considering the fact that I'm not using Celestion V30 speakers and it is in rather good condition for being almost 20 years old.

The tubes are getting rather old though and I know for a fact that the amp hasn't been used that frequently during the last year.

Now to my problem; after the amp has been ON for more that fifteen, twenty minutes, it starts smelling like heated plastic which also is rather reminiscent of the smell of a brand new amp. The smell is pretty thick though, so it's pretty irritating. However, there is no smoke or any noticeable changes with the sound and the overall performance of the amp.
I'm not sure if this is an overheating problem or if there is something wrong with the tubes causing it to smell!? The fan mounted over the reverb is working as it should and I haven't turned it off. I also haven't switched it to 100 RMS, so there's really no call for overheating, right?
It also smells for about an hour after I've shut it down but then there is no smell until I turn it back on again.

My question to you is: Have you experienced this with your MARK amp? Do they smell when you turn them on? Do they smell anything at all? If so, is the smell different from when it's turned off?

Best Regards / F.

I had the same issue with both Mark IVs that I had- head & combo. One one it was the brand new tubes burning themselves in. I never figured out what the cause was on the other, but I never had any performance issues. Gotta admit though, it really worried me at first. The smell of something burning isn't exactly what you want or expect from an amp

If all else fails, see if you can take it to a qualified technician and have it thoroughly checked out before buying it.

I wouldn't hesitate to call Mesa with the serial number and discuss the issue. I have found them extremely helpful in situations like this. A few years aog I had a MKIV with a clean channel that wouldn't clean up completely...the tech listened over the phone, I tried swapping a couple preamp tubes, and then offered to go through it completely for only shipping cost. All the best...sounds like it could be a sweet amp.
