Peavey Valveking 212 / Blackstar HT stage 60

I have convinced myself that I deserve a half way decent valve amp as at the moment I am getting by with a Roland cube60. I have a limited budget so have narrowed it down to the Peavey Valveking 212 and the Blackstar HT stage 60. I am going to find a store in my area that has both amps so I can try them both out at the same time with my guitar to see how they compare. However, I was wondering if you guys have had any experience of using these amps and your opinions.

CHEERS!

Blackstar, hands down. The Peavey is alright but I think the Blackstar is superior in every way. You probably could be fine with the 40 or 20 watt versions of it, depending on your needs and budget as well.

I have/had a Peavy VK212 and it was a PIA from the start. It took three of them before I found one that would work for more than a week. Then the problems with the tubes, reverb tank/hiss, and despite putting JJ Euro tubes in it the sound.

I would up just going out of my effects unit into the return of the effects loop.

Get a Mesa Boogie Express series. I have a Express 5:50 2x12 and I love it.

Out of curiosity, what are you going to be using the amp for? If bedroom/practice, the 60 watters are going to be over-kill but if you're gigging, 40-60 should sit nicely into things. Also, what is your budget?

I'll be using it for pub and club gigs - mostly rock/metal covers at the mo ranging from Cream to Rage Against the Machine. I don't really use an amp at home (headphones into PC). My budget is 700 ($1150) absolute max
Interesting input so far on the Peavey - I was seriously considering the Peavey as it was a 150 cheeper, but maybe that would be false economy if it aint that good. I also am really keen to have a combo with two 12" speakers as it is just me on the guitar in my band and want the sound to have a reasonable amount of spread.

Blackstar all the way. And seriously, you would only need 20 watts. I use my HT-5 on stage, and it's even plenty loud enough.

I was thinking something like the 20 or 40 version as a head and doing an extension cab and I'd go Blackstar over that particular Peavey. I like some Peaveys like the old JSX and the Classics a lot but I wouldn't really go with a ValveKing...not my cup of tea.
At that price, you could also look into a used Mesa F series or DC as a viable alternative as well but I think the Blackstar is going to be your best bet.

The ValveKing is not a great amp, some people say it's the worst Peavey amp. A 6505 or XXX maybe (used) would cover your needs but it wouldn't have the versatility of the Blackstar and the two clean modes on Blackstar amps are great.

+1 The JSX amps sound amazing. I have the half stack. With the combo, though, you get built in reverb.

Thanks for all the replies folks - failing finding a used JSX or something similar on ebay it looks like its Blackstar all the way. Don't think I will even bother trying the Valveking if there are reliability issues.

Cheers!

Re: Peavey Valveking 212 / Blackstar HT stage 60

I've owned a valveking VK100 head. It was ok, nothing that really did anything special. The 6L6's gave it a nice low end, and the cleans were actually good, the dirt was just average, but I could dial in the brown sound without much effort. For a new head @ $500.00 bought the same day for a summer mini-tour kickoff, it worked out great out of the box. Now, on the other hand the blackstar amps really impressed the hell out of me. Very nice smooth saturation, brown sound right away and then some. Nice warm cleans. So, what you are about to do it the right thing by bringing your trusty axe and play them both. But also, being a Mesa guy, you should check out some of the lower end models. The F series if they have any around, or the Express/Subway series.. Great amps, nice and tight. Anyway, good luck!

Just to let you know guys - I went for the blackstar and couldn't be more pleased. I love the clean and dirty sounds and the overall flexibility of the channels. It's so nice to finally have the sound I always wanted. Thanks again for the input.
