Please help me choose new pickups

Hi friends

I currently have a set of Evos in my rg 550 which I really like, but am thinking of changing them soon.

I'm looking for some pups with the same high output, but perhaps not so bright sounding!

Do you have any recommendations that I might like?

Cheers

You could take a bit of a hit on the power front and go for a Tone Zone or Breed pickups, they aren't bright. If you have to have uber power, the Crunch lab is a pretty insane pickup and is probably the only pikcup of that kind of output this I really liked.

The liquifire is pretty sweet too, I don;t know what you'd put in the middle though. Evo middle?

Use the search function, browse the review section, and visit the pickup picker tool at dimarzio.com

If I were you I would try the Evo 2 pups - I have Evos in my Jem and I also find them a little too bright for my taste - but I've been reading about the Evo 2 pups and I've heard that they are like the Evos but without the shrill bright high end and a little less output...

I've also read some good reviews on the Breed but I haven't tried them...the Dimarzio site has the bass rated pretty high on the Breed - close to the Tone Zone and I find the Tone Zone to be too dark and bassy, which is why I liked the Evos in the first place...

It's hard with pups cuz you don't really know how they're going to sound in your guitar until you've shelled about the buck$ but Dimarzio has a good return policy...

Super 3 in the bridge. As for the neck, it could be the Breed, neck model. You'll keep the same output and eliminate all the brightness.

If you're tired of Evos, don't get an Evo 2. I have both and those are my favourite pickups, but they don't sound that different IMO.

Re: Please help me choose new pickups

Do you really NEED that kind of output? The Evos are some of the hotter Dimarzios, and if you want to stay that hot your options are a bit limited - Dactivators (also bright), X2N (limited experience), maybe the Crunch Lab (no experience) or Drop-Sonic...

If you drop down into the medium power range, your options expand greatly. I just threw an AT-1 into the bridge of my Strat, and absolutely love it - it's not super-tight in the low end so it wouldn't be my first choice for technical riffing, but it's one of the best bridge humbuckers I've ever played for soloing, very vocal and smooth but still harmonically responsive. In a humbucker equipped guitar, I suspect that and a PAF Pro could keep me pretty happy.

EDIT - also, on a similar note, how close to your strings are the Evos? If you've got them right up as close as you can get them, backing them off to 3-4mm or even a tad further (measured from the E fretted on the 24th) should help them smooth out a little. You'll lose some output, but that's what your gain knob is for.

Re: Please help me choose new pickups

Tons of ohm power make for driving dist on tubes and boxes but there is a sacrifice of tone on anything close to a cleaner tone. I am a single coil guy myself, I have a HB fullsize axe as well but that puppy does not sound good clean at all. I like my dual rail single coils which give me the best of both worlds, they sound great on those strat tones and yet have a huge ohm output, more than a lot of std fullsize HBs.

The low impedence EMGs always seem to crank and punch on the fullsize HB high gain thing. You can get too much output on a pickup, and they sound great pushing a high gain tone but not much good for anything else. I dig versitility myself.

I love strats, always have, I dig the tones they can do but I also require they drive the crap out of my boxes or tubes when I want that option. I use bottom plates on my std single coils which increases output about 1ohm and rolls off a little of the brittle high end. I have dual rails in my other strat which have really high output but still sound like a single coil when you roll them down.
