Power Amp...

Hi
so far, i have needed a big amp at home because I don't have to play loud... (So right now i'm the proud owner of a.... 10W Park amp... Ibanez JEM7VWH or UV7BK --> SansAmp GT2 --> Roland SRV 3030 reverb --> Park 10W... find the intruder )
but now, as with my band we're planning to play live I'm gonna need a bigger boat...
I was thinkng of buying a used Marshall combo like a 8080 and go into the effect loop but... I realised that now, I could afford a power amp and cabinet instead...
so I found a used marshall 1912 that is big enough (I don't need 4x12") but the big question is .. what about the power amp ?
here, in Paris France, they don't sell much of those, but mostly combos and heads + cabinets so finding what is available is hard
So far, I've found (used) some really expensive mesa boogie, one tube powered marshall 9200 (but expensive too and too big for what I need) and a marshall 8080 or 8008 (or both, I dunno)
searching the forum I've found that there was a rocktron something too..
but that's it...
so
I don't know what should I take... does tube power amp really make huge difference ? and what other poweramps are there there around ?

I think VHT has a pretty good reputation as far as power amps (and amps in general) go..., is buying anything off the internet from the US an option?

I bought a Mesa 2:90 (new version) last week, that thing is killer !!!

But if you´re lookng for power-amps, be sure there are only 2 brands :

Mesa/Boogie (2:90, 295, Strategy 400 and 500,...)
and VHT (2/50/2, 2/90/2,...)

Try the Engl 840/50 (2x50 watts 5881) or the Engl 930/60 (2x60 watts 6l6). They are GREAT poweramps with lots of nice features, not too expensive, and they should be available in France. They can easily compete with the VHT's.

You could also try an ADA microtube 200. I like these, seeing that I have 4 of them.

Make sure you do your due diligence selecting the power amp. Having built 4 tube amplifiers myself, I can say that the tone is defined by the power amp 60%. Crappy preamp into a good power amp will sound decent and even the best preamp will sound bad if you run it through a bad power amp. If possible, try your preamp with as many power amps as you can running into the same cab. You'll see what I mean. Play with presence control (and depth/focus/density control if there is one), this is one of the most important controls in the whole setup. Try playing at different volumes. Some cabs and amps don't sound good at low volumes - they weren't designed for this.

thanks for all the advices above
as sweet as those power amps look, they're not widely available here in france...
i found a ada microtube for 250$ off a website, is it worth it ?
I'll try my chance in germany, they're cheaper than france and they have more stuffs (if a german guy reads this and knows a good online shop other than musik-service...)

Yeah, 250 is about the going rate for them right now. I have had my ADA's close to 10 years and havent had any problems with them.

and my 3 finalists are....
the marshall 8008 (solid state) (220$)
the rocktron velocity 100 (solid state) (280$)
and the ADA microtube 100 (hybrid, tubes + solid state) (275$)

but I don't know which one will be at the bottom of my rack

I'd say that solid state or hybrid will be just a waste of money. You'll still buy a tube amp in the end, but at a bigger expense both in terms of time and money.

Ah yes, the tube purist. This is an opinion, try out what you can, and buy what you like, simple as that.
