Quick wires question

hey guys

I made a Y cable out of a few spare cables and my soldering iron , that serves the following purpose ;

Alesis mk1 monitor LEFT ------->

Alesis mk1 monitor RIGHT ------->

>----------- Laptop line in

But this only gives me mono sound , the same in each speaker.

What id like to know is what kind of cable do i need to buy to maintain stereo operation?
i was looking at that one , but i dont know if i need Stereo to 2 mono , or stereo to 2 stereo :/

Re: Quick wires question

i'm not sure if I understand you correctly (and the link don't work).
You want to hook your monitors up to your laptop? But you must mean line out into the monitors, right?

If it is a headphone like plug out from the laptop, a stereo out in a single jack, then you need a stereo plug that goes out to 2 mono, left and right.

If you use a mono plug to 2 other mono plugs, then you will, as you noticed, get the same signal at both left and right.

You need something called an "insert cable".
Like this (but I guess your laptop has a small plug?).

Re: Quick wires question

Correct. You want 2 monos that combine to form 1 stereo. As the photo shows, the stereo has an additional ring around it where as the mono's only have one ring.
