Talking Recording Issues!!

Ok, I am trying to record my guitars this week and I am having trouble making them sound good. I have a Digitech GSP 1101, through a BBE, and an EQ, and into a Peavey 6505+ for the power section. We are using 2 Sure SM57 mics, into the Presonus Firestudio. We are putting the cab in a small alcove with the walls covered with studio foam. Could my problem be mic placement? Any other tips?

Re: Recording Issues!!

Can you be more specific? like describe what sounds bad?

first comes to my mind is try only 1 mic to see if things get better.

Re: Recording Issues!!

You could be having phasing issues but, it's hard to assess without knowing more details. Perhaps post a clip of what is sounding bad? Where in relation to the speaker do you have the mic placed at?

I think the main problem is that the other guitar player recorded his guitars using the mic's he uses for vocals. I am using 2 sure SM57's. I think the problem is that the vocal mics are far more sensitive then the 57's, so when I crank my amp to record, its either not loud enough once recorded or it clips out to much and sounds like crap.

Re: Recording Issues!!

Based on the information provided there could be a multitude of problems. Based on your last post you may not have your levels quite right. Have you got a pad switch engaged somewhere? As mentioned phasing could also possibly be an issue.

Pics could also be useful here to better understand your setup.q

Re: Recording Issues!!

Careful if the vocal mic. is a condenser, it might be damaged if not used properly when recording guitar.

We ended up using the 57's and it came out good!
