Satriani Stopped using strap locks?

I was wondering if those Planet Waves woven straps that Joe Satriani endorses have a thick or rigid enough leather button attachment piece, so you don't need strap locks?
I'm just curious because Satriani has always used some form of strap locks, and now he doesn't.
My thoughts are:
1) The planet waves straps he endorses don't really need them (even though they make a locking version of them)
2) Satriani gets so many free ones, he can just replace them all the time when they start to wear
3)He found that he doesn't run & jump around enough to really need them in the first place.

What do you think? I know its a silly topic, but I'm just curious as to why a guy who has used them for so many years quit using them...

I've never had a regular strap come off, but like to use strap locks "just in case"

I have 2 of the satch straps and those things are a pain to get on and off a guitar. Also, and I could be mistaken, but I think the strap button on the JS is bigger in diameter than most.

I have a couple of those straps. One is super stiff and is hard to get on and off. The other is broken in, but goes over some oversized strap buttons. Most comfortable straps I've ever had!

I also have one of the satriani straps, but i put schaller strap locks on it, so i never have a problem with the strap itself detaching. I think satch uses some kind of lock on his also.

He doesn't. Thats kinda what threw me. He used dimarzio clip locks for years, then some daddario lock, then that became planet waves.. but he doesn't use the locking ones. Oh well, just was curious

Personally never liked the need to put the clips on for the Dimarzio locks.

Oversized strap buttons and a good quality leather ended strap are usually plenty.

Unless you're doing 80s style acrobatics.

Re: Satriani Stopped using strap locks?

Having one of his PW straps, I can see why he wouldn't feel the need for straplocks. The thing is hard to get on and off the guitar - like you really have to work the leather when you first get them just to get the thing on and it's a bear to get off. Also, like Mic said, he's not really flailing his guitar around in any way that would really require the extra measure of safety like Vai does. The PW straps are good straps, btw.

Re: Satriani Stopped using strap locks?

One more reason why I like the Ibanez strap buttons that come in the higher end guitars. I also have one of Joe's Planet Waves Straps and the ends are pretty think. Once you get them on a JS, the strap is not going to come off unless you take it off. The combination of the leather ends and the large strap buttons on the JS, makes is unnecessary to use straplocks on that guitar.

Jimmy

P.S.: I find the Dimarzio cliplocks too fruity for my taste.

I was once told buy a wise old Guitar Tech, insted of tring to work the strap over the large end, unscrew the screw, and put in on over the small end, and screw the screw back in.
Never stressed getting them on ever since.
