Different speakers are made to handle differrent frequencies, and different wattage.
If your going to replace the speaker (probably not worth it) I would check out guitar speaker manufacturers, rather than speakers designed for other uses.
If you want to upgrade your amp look in buy/sell magazines, ebay, loot (if your in england) as you can usually pick up an ok amp for really cheap. Good enough to practice with. I managed to get an H|H electronic (now no longer in production, Laney bought the last of their equipment) 100W solid state amp for £70 (about $100-120) which is great for practicing, but can also crank up pretty loud.
