Tell me if this is a good idea or not.

At the music store I work at, people come in and ask if we rent guitars for a couple nights or something. And we don't. In fact no one here does. (Tucson, Arizona) Then I thought, people usually have extra guitars so the need to rent one would be very scarce. However amps is a different matter. For example, Earth, Wind and Fire was in town playing a show and their Mesa F-100 had problems. So the road manager came into the store and bought a F-100 combo for $1300. I would think if the opportunity was there, they would have much wanted to rent the amp for the gig and not pay $1300. The only exception is that their may not have worked at all and the needed a new one anyways. But if someone just needed the amp for one show because they didn't have one, do you think a little business that rented out high end equipment would be a useful and productive service? Please say yes or no and why. Thanks

A local guitar shop here does this, and quite successfully. They rent PA Systems, wireless systems, amps, etc, etc. I saw someone come in with a Flextone II that wasn't working right saying he needed it for a gig that night, so the guy at the store handed him a brand new one off the floor for use that night

Hell yes... one, it could save people money... two, it could give people a chance to test out various equipment to see if it meets their needs.
On the downside, you could get some damaged equipment back... however, with renting, you could always have a contract stating that if the equipment is damaged, then they'd have to pay for it, etc...
Sounds like a spiffy idea.
I said "spiffy."

The shop I visit most often does it, letting you rent equipment.

Well... kind off... as long as you bring it back "as new" there is no problem. They charge you a small fee, and if yu accidently decide to buy it they count the fee into the total price.

Hahaha, I love that... Yeah, the shop i frequent does it too on occasion. It's a risky buisness to get into, high overhead, and i bet you run into a lot of jerks who tear up an amp cover a bit and then refuse to buy it, but it'd be a good service to offer if you could get it to work.
