Re: Thermion

Yeah, I have tried it, they've got a brand new halfstack over at my local shop.

It was all about the crunch. It has a VERY HARSH chainsaw-type crunch, and terribly unresponsive picking dynamics. It didn't perform or react at all like you would expect a tube amp to. Single notes were not smooth and sustaining, they were more of a buzzy sizzle, very brittle and hard to work with.

Now. . they'res always the chance that it was a dud, but I kind of doubt it since it was brand new. I check to see if the speaker impedence was matching and all was setup correctly, and it appeared to be. I tried it with a Epiphone Les Paul Custom, and a Andy Timmons Sig. Ibanez. (the current one, brand new as well).

Re: Thermion

Thats unfortunate to hear. I'd like to hear some user clips still. The site ones don't sound too bad.

Re: Thermion

Check it out in-person. I hated it 100%, but it just might be your bread and butter, who knows..

Re: Thermion

On another note I tried one of those new Peavey valve combos, and it was very unresponsive to dynamics

But for 800 (aus) it would be a great buy

Re: Thermion

Well, thats the thing, Peaveys may not be the finest, but they're easily in most people's financial grasp, thats the way Peavey has always rolled.

But the Thermion head is something like $1200 US, which is about the same as a Peavey JSX head, only the JSX is alot better sounding. ( I used to own one, but I sold it. No response to dynamics, but in the opposite way: The Thermion doesn't want to ring out the note when you hit it, and the JSX/XXX is extremely compressed and its hard to work a detailed softer sound out of it.) But. . .at least you can get plenty of usable tones easily out of the JSX. I don't know if you could milk one out of the Thermion, honestly.

Were you talking about the Valveking? It looks kinda cool, but it is extremely cheap, which some people may go "YAY!" for but that most likely means cheap parts and cheap labor. Pure speculation though, I won't comment anymore on the Valveking until I've tried it in person.

Pretty expensive for what you get, IMO.
