Tone-Recipe For VH - "Why can't this be love"?

My all-time favourite song is Van Halen's 5150: Why can't this be love. One of the many fascinating things about it is the flanged guitar lead that floats constantly like some swirling green dragon above (counter-motion to) a storming sea of wild whipping chords. I've been trying for a long time to get that tone. The only effects I have right now is a boss multi-fx processor.

Can you tell how Eddie Van Halen got that amazing sound!?!

Do you mean that funky, fat analog-like sound on the main riff melody?

That's a keyboard.

Or are you talking about that lead part inbetween the Sammy scat part??

As far as tone goes, it seems like his standard tone, but it's out front of the mix a tad & it does have an effect (not sure what though) - maybe an envelope/modulation type effect...

I always thought it was a phaser. If I remember correctly, when Ibanez introduced the Tone-Lok pedals, they had demos of them on their site and one of the phaser demos sounded almost exactly like that song. I agree though, great...GREAT song.

It's without doubt a synth. Check their "Live without a Net" homevideo for further confirmation.

The song starts off with this deep, "thumping" that slowly gets louder and louder...

Till all of a sudden this sweet, sweet sound comes in loud and clear-all on its own - it's a "swirling" sound (sounds best like a flanged guitar to me.)-just 3 notes(B-C-B, I think) at that particular point, before the drums and the rythm guitars kick in.

That 3 note part happens before every main chorus and it drives me wild!!

Yup, you're talking about the synth part. Perhaps look into getting a gui-board!
