Tube Brands

I've heard good things about Ruby and JJ tubes. Anyone here use them. I need to replace tubes in a 5150II and want the least amount of noise without loseing a lot of gain.

Re: Tube Brands

JJs are smooth. Sovteks are loud but noisy and poor in sound quality IMO. The Electro Harmonix 12AX7 (owned by Sovtek) are very quiet and very loud and gainy, so if you are after gain I would recommend those.

And get SED Winged C (Not Svetlana - theres a huge difference) for the power amp - JJ is a distant second.

Ruby is just rebranded. Mostly Sovteks but sometimes you get a JJ in the mix.

I have got tubes from www.tubedepot.com and www.thetubestore.com and both are very good

Re: Tube Brands

Hard to argue with any of that... I'm a big fan of EH preamp tubes along with either SED (Winged C) or JJ power tubes, and I've been really happy with my orders from Tube Deport and Tube Store as well.

Re: Tube Brands

I forgot to mention, Thrash - if you really want to improve your sound, buy some RFT 12AX7s from tubedepot.com (they had them last I checked). They sound like Mullards and cost a fraction of the price. Plus they are preamp tubes so they will last you a very long time
