Question Tubes for ENGL Frieball 100

Hey,
I recently bought a used Fireball 100 and want to swap the tubes, but I have a few questions:

- I read that 5881 power tubes produce a bit less trebly, less distorted tone (as opposed to the standard 6L6s), which would be preferable for me - is that correct, or how do these tubes compare?

- Has someone dealt with this site: Analog Tubes Engl Fireball 100 - is it reliable, could I savely order there? Which set of tubes would you recommend (Mesa, Sovtek,...)?

- On all tube sets from the above link: why are there three "preamp tubes" and one "balanced inverter tube", all being 12AX7s?

- When I buy tubes elsewere in sets of two, is there something I have to take care about, or will any two pairs of, say 5881 tubes form the same brand match?

Thanks for your patience, as I'm a complete novice concerning tube amps

Re: Tubes for ENGL Frieball 100

5881 should be equivalent to 6L6. Different brands of tubes will sound different, even tubes from the same batch. Maybe that's what you're hearing.
I suggest trying JJ tubes. They are current production, great sounding and reliable. www.eurotubes.com is the distributor for US and sells them at decent prices. All 4 preamp tubes are 12ax7/ecc83 I think. Output tubes should be matched in general, but some people actually prefer them unmatched. Remember, this is not hi-fi, we're not trying to avoid distortion but to create distortion. What hi-fi folks run away from may be beneficial to us guitar players. Towards that end, you don't need a balanced phase inverter and output tubes matching is not super important, you just want them to be close so you can bias them both within the safe range. Also, tubes from the same brand won't match by default as there is great variation.
Cheers

Thanks for your response! I heard many good things about JJ tubes already, so I think I will give them a try

I put SED "winged-C" 6L6s into my FB60, but their prices have gone up since then. I like the Tungsol and JJ tubes also.
