Question What kind of cab can my combo amp power, if any?

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a Hughes and Kettner 20th Anniversary tube combo... I must say, I love the sound and look. Ran me $350 used and is in great shape. I'd highly recommend this amp.

Anyways, there's an "external speaker" input on the back that has "20 watts at 8-16 ohms" written by it... I was thinking about adding a cab, probably an Orange open-back 1x12 or 2x12... I've never connected a cab to a combo amp so I was wondering how it would work. I'm a bit concerned because the amp is only rated at 20watts and the cab is rated for 60 or 120 watts. Is there anything I should know?

I know somebody who converted a Mesa combo into a headshell and plugged it into a Mesa 4x12, so I believe you're safe.

You can run any cab that is 8-16 ohms judging by what is written there. Your amp produces 20watts. As long as the speakers are capable of handling over 20watts you will be right.

does that mean that I'll get the same 20watt power through each speaker? and if so, does that strain the tubes more?

You won't strain anything. Its designed to do it, that's why you have the option on the amp. It will share the 20watts across the speakers.

I'd personally run a 2x12 @ 8ohms mono. That would probably give you the best overall detail and fullness that the amp has to offer at its 20 watt rating. Something in the 120 watt range. Being 20 watts i'd say 8 ohms will sound better than something like the Orange cab running at 16 ohms. I'd suggest trying a Mesa.

how much increased volume power am I looking at in a 2x12 add-on situation. My friend is telling me that since the amp is at 20watts, it cant sufficiently power the extra speakers and that I wont be getting much extra volume out of the extra cab. Is this correct?

Wrong. I ave played a Vox Night Train, which is 15 watts, through a Marshall 1960 4x12 cabinet. The Vox powered it no problem.

Yeah that's silly to think that. Those battery powered Smokey amps can power a 4x12 cab.
