The guitar sound from the album "Introspection" from Greg Howe is my all time favorite. A very "wooden" sound. I love it to death.

Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

My alltime favorite in tone is Blues Saraceno. The pedals and the amp, which his father built, are freakin' awesome. It's the best guitar tone I heard so far.

Awwwwww, nuh, I use both Mesa (Tri-Axis + Stereo 290) and various JEMs, but Damn! I WISH I could get Guthrie's tone nailed - that man has absolutely magic fingers!

Mind you, I totally agree that tone is largely in the players hands, not so much the gear - first time Robben Ford came to Australia he brought his legendary Dumble amp - absolutely everyone who saw him was blown away! Next time he came out, he rented a Fender Twin Amp (the 'rodded one with the red knobs) ..... he sounded ....... exactly the same ....... oops .......

A lesson well learnt!

This guy here Stephen Ross has got one of the most amazing tones I have ever heard not to mention he's a killer player too.

Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

Best tone...thats hard....
Petrucci on Images and Words was damn good, and Scenes from a memory was great tone too, especially on "Overture 1928". His solo record has some great tones. Not a fan of his C-down-tuned tone though.
Satch on Is there love in space was great too.
Gilberts tone is always great, no matter what.
I love Becker's tone, though there are times when its a bit harsh.
Lifeson on Test for Echo was quite good.
Andy Timmons on Resolution is drop dead amazing.
Eric Johnson has great tone most of the time.
Vai's early tone was great, especially on "The Riddle."
Guthrie has some sweet tone.
I appreciate Rhoads tone most of the time.
Zakk's Pride and Glory stuff had some good lower-gain tone.
Joe Perry's tone is hugely lush and beautiful.
David Gilmour, of course, has great great tone.
thats all i can think of right now. Im gonna go practice.

Oh man! OK, I know tone is subjective and all that, but are you sure about this? Ibanez over Suhr? Mesa over Cornford? Ibanez and Mesa would lose BADLY! Very badly.

Hey Dee, no mention of Brett Garsed.
Aww, damn! Well, Brett's sound doesn't particularly stand out to me but he's in my top 5 guitarists, most definitely. I must admit though, his tone on "Brothers" is great, but that song is incredible anyway. Every guitarist NEEDS to listen to Brett Garsed. The guy is not as well known as he should be, but he's right up there with the world's finest players. Brett's tone on the new Planet X album is completely different, btw. Brett told me himself that Virgil was after a kinda classic AC/DC guitar sound this time around, which is weird considering they play fusion but it works very well. You can hear some samples of the new PX with Brett over at the MySpace page, btw.

It's funny how I was recently sending Brett mp3's of his own music because he still hadn't heard the final mix of the last track on the new PX album. Hehe.

Please, people! DO NOT IGNORE BRETT GARSED!

Thank you.

Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

Im really surprised no one mentioned Tony MacAlpine!

Tony MacAlpine just has this tone that is so unique.. it can be angelic at times, and pure cynical at others.. Of course, its all in the fingers, and Tony definately proves it. It only gets better on his actual CDs, but his live is amazing too..

Of course, What mention of tone is without Marty Friedman, He can use any guitar with any amp (people always made fun of his Crate amps, since they are basically budget amps, no tube elitism here) but he always sounds so great.. He has that raw aggression to his heavier style, yet so dreamy clean playing, you can get lost in it.. He sends chills down my spine

BTW people who aren't open minded, you wont like these clips, but you cant deny the mans talent. Hes a musician, not a "metalhead", Get over it.

OHHH and one of my favs not many people heard of I bet, hide from X japan/Zilch... He has amazing tone, that whole band had amazing tone, glad Pata is playing with Marty now.. But hide was just insane, even with acoustic he got great tone.. Check this out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srHxlL9mpSI

Also, The best clean tone I ever heard, Alex Skolnick.. Its almost spine chilling, but in a total different way than Marty
Hard to find clips cause everything live isnt as smooth as on record obviously, but listen to his Trio cds, Trust me. Makes me wanna buy a hollow-body http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZdx7...elated&search=

Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

Nick, you'll find there's a few snobs on here who think Tony doesn't know jack s**t about tone. I actually prefer his tone most of all on the Planet X and CAB stuff, but best of all I have some recent live recordings of the Devil's Slingshot stuff and he sounds GREAT.

Yeah, I have to give it to Tony too. One can't just justify his tone by only listening to him on Mr. Vai's live shows. Some of his early solo stuff are simply awesome dude...

Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

And the one I have missed and I often reffer to it as a focal point of a good hi-gain distorted sound and that is
"Anthems of rebellion" album of Arch Enemy - Andy Sneap produced there.
It's basically a crancked mesa boogie recto tightened by TS-9.
Awesome tone and even more awesome overall production.
Cristally clean and articulate, almost synthetic but I really like it in a certain way.
And last, but not least important, the Amott brothers are one hell of a guitar players so they really put everything in right place.

I've got some G3 DVD's and Vai @ Astoria and it seems Tony always gets shafted in the mix. I can hardly hear him yet I see him ripping. That sucks! Of course when it comes time for the G3 Jam every (featured) guitarist is loud and clear.
