Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

Not sure, my taste has changed quite a bit over time. In recent years I've mainly concentrated on trying to get my own tones the way I want it, and I'm very happy atm.
Can't say if it's the best tone I've ever heard... But they combine elements from players whose tone I really like. So it's more or less the sound of my favourite guitarists/tones put together.

Gotta go with Nuno, Ty Tabor, Alex Lifeson, and Mr. Adam Jones.

Re: Who has the best tone you have heard?

I dont know how everyone can ignore John Mayer's tone... Hes got amazing chops AND tone... although he does just use a bunch of customized fender amps... and some vintage pedals... nothing special. He sounds really good though... ALWAYS. Even without a soundman.

I've always thought that a good musician can sound good anywhere, with or without a soundman. I used to play Trombone all over the place, and I practiced many hours to be able to do that... I was actually pretty good. Did a few jazz gigs in some pretty dead rooms, and pulled off some awesome tone!
