Would it make any sense . . .

. . . to plug, say a 50 watt head, into a 1x12 cabinet? I'm just wondering if instead of buying a power brake or the likes for playing at bedroom levels, you could just get a small extension cab and play through that. Or would you still only be on volume "1"? And even more extreme - something like 1 x 8" "cab".

Re: Would it make any sense . . .

many many combos are exactly that, a 50watt head into a 1x12. and they can be LOUD..

i don't think you'd notice much volume difference at bedroom levels..

as long as you know a little about ohms and watts you could use most cabs, like the 1x8"

oh and read up on the powerbrake etc, i've read on this forum a lot of people hate the sound they give...

Re: Would it make any sense . . .

I once plugged a Peavey Mace 120 watt combo up to a little 2" speaker that I removed from an old transistor radio. When I strummed the first power chord, the speaker made a fart sound, a puff of smoke and then died.

Re: Would it make any sense . . .

That reminded me of the beginning of "Back to the Future" but that was a huge speaker!

Re: Would it make any sense . . .

That scene from Back to the Future is amazing. Yeah I was just thinking what the best way to get a 50 watt head to sound decent at slightly louder-than-bedroom levels (I've got a big bedroom). Here's the million-dollar question - you plug a 50 watt head (for example a Marshall dsl50) into an extension cab and turn it to "2" on the master volume setting. Would a smaller speaker be quieter, and therefore allow you to turn up your master volume on the head?

Re: Would it make any sense . . .

Less speakers doesn't always mean perceived volume decrease, so keep that in consideration. You'd probably be only subtracting about 3dB per each speaker you subtract.
