1989 Floral Jem wiring assistance please

Hi All

New to the forums, would like to ask for assistance in wiring for
a 1989 Floaral Patteren Jem. I am the orginal owner and stupidly
had repalced the orginal bridge pickup with an EMG 85 pickup and
sold the orginal (I Know I know) in the early 90's

I have bought a Dimarzio evolution which follows the
same color and output(fairly close) the wiring also
appears to be a match to the orginal

In trying to put it back I have found that the wiring is a lot more
complicated than I thought. I realize that my explanation will not use the correct terminology so please excuse my ignorance and crudeness

After scouring both this site and the web I decided that attached wiring diagram best relates to my specific Jem and the stock VLX53 5 way selector switch it came with (no I haven't changed it)

In following attached diagram and numerous failed attempts I decided to go to the basics. In using basic logic that pickups work like a speaker (there is a positive lead and a negative lead) I took the switch out of the guitar and used a multi meter to check continuity

The results make me think either I am not finding or following the
correct wiring diagram. Or the VLX53 switch has become faulty somehow

Again please excuse the crudeness of the explanation but I have attached a stock photo of the same switch

I have also attached a crude diagram I have made with the switch pin numbering I have created for this post

Using a mutimeter and testing for continuity without anything connected to the
switch here is what I found (I have labelled as the switch would appear mounted):

Pin 5 and 8 - Continuity (Bridge Pickup Postion 1)

(Move selector one postion from right to left)

Pin 5 7 and 8 - Continuity (Bridge and Single Coil Postion 2)

(Move selector one postion from right to left)

Pin 5 and 7 - Continuity (Single Coil Postion 3)

(Move selector one postion from right to left)

Pin 1 2 and 4 - Continuity (Neck and Single Coil Postion 4)

(Move selector one postion from right to left)

Pin 1 and 4 - Continuity (Neck position 5)

As you can see from my tests neither pin 3 nor pin 6 ever have continuity Further if we use the crudeness that pickups and follow speaker logic (positive and negative lead) since all negative leads are grounded the 5 way selector switch only switches between the positive output of either the Humbucker or Single coil.

If I follow the diagram I have included we never get output until the selector hits position 4 as pin 5 is not supposed to be connected.I naturally have experminated and bridged pins 4 and 5 and outputted this to the volume pot which somewhat works but then I have to completley disregard the wiring diagram

Which somewhat works but then I have to completley disregard the wiring diagram

And this is where I am at....completely lost.

My first question....Is the VLX53 faulty as pins 3 and 6 never show continuity?

It seems strange but if so and the switch has continuity as follows:

Pin 5 and 8

Pin 5 7 and 8

Pin 5 and 7

Pin 1 2 and 4

Pin 1 and 4

Is there a way I can use the switch as is. Excuse my ignorance but if I bridge pins 4 and 5 as my output to the volume I think it should work I just need to know the wires/colors that should connect to which pin

Thank you in advance for any advice it is greatly appreciated!!
