1989 Pickup Color

I have a couple 1989 Ibanez's in my collection, and compared to the Ibanez I own these two are unique in that they have gray pickups (the others have black). I've seen first hand gray IBZ single coil and humbuckers (F1, F2, F3 and C1...though i'm assuming they were all gray for a while). I've also seen these same pickups on different year guitars and they are black. How long did they use gray pickups? Was this something unique to 1989? If so do all '89 guitars have gray pickups or just a subset of them made during a certain time period?

Re: 1989 Pickup Color

It only showed up in the 89 catalog. Like many of their specs, there's probably a little overlap.

Re: 1989 Pickup Color

I think it's a 1989 thing and I think you'll also find that it's inconsistent from guitar to guitar. I think this may have something to do with the guitar being a US market or overseas market (there are definitely hardware differences between US and overseas guitars from that time). They may also have been testing the market at the time as well.

1989 was the first year for the F1/F2/F3 as well as C1/C2 pickups. It was also the first year of the RG750/760. Both of those guitars had black hardware in 1989, which was switched to cosmo in 1990. The catalog shows a RG760HP with grey pickups, but I had one and it had black pickups.
