250k Or 500k Pots with Single-Coil

Hello folks, not posted here in a long, long time. Needing some help!

I have a lovely 1950s archtop guitar (Hofner) with a single low-powered single-coil pickup - due to both pots being seized and the wiring being duff (unsurprising considering its almost 60 years old), this winter's little project is to get it working again.

The original pots are 250k, however I was wondering if 500k pots would be better or worse. The guitar always had a very nice clear snappy tone with lots of presence and low-end, I was wondering if 500k pots would make the tone too trebly or if it would be better sticking with 250k.

Help me choose wisely!

Regards

Re: 250k Or 500k Pots with Single-Coil

It doesn't make a radical change, but the higher values give you a more pronounced resonant peak.

Pots , even "fancy" ones, are pretty cheap. If you're comfortable wiring your own guitars, it may make sense to just buy a set of each and try them both, and maybe record some clips to A/B to see which you prefer. It probably won't make a radical difference, though. The 250ks may sound a little thicker and meatier than the 500s, but it shouldn't be night and day.

Thanks Drew, based on that I think I'll stick with 250k.
