Air Norton Problem

I use an Air Norton 7 in the neck of my RG1527. I love it. It's got the extended bottom end, balances well with the Bridge, and just sounds great.

I decided that I wanted my RG1570 to have the exact same configuration as the the RG1527 so I recently bought and installed an Air Norton in that one.

My first impressions upon hearing it were that these were completely different pickups. The PAF Joe I had in there before sounded more like the Air Norton in my 7 string, than this pickup does. I can't understand it. I've double checked my wiring, and have gone over everything several times, step by step.

This air norton is quiet, has no mids, no bottoms, It barely has the output of a single coil, and my God, it's glassy. No Bottom, No Mid, No Smoothness at all, just horrible Brittleness.

Is it possible I have a dud, or is this how all the Alnico ones sound, versus the Ceramic in the AN7?

Re: Air Norton Problem

The PAF Joe is an excellent pickup, but the Air Norton is not supposed to be that bad. Have you checked the wiring?

Re: Air Norton Problem

Yeah, Checked it, and correct as per Dimarzio website.

(Green + Bare) to Volume pot base, Red to Selector Switch, White and Black together and taped off.

Re: Air Norton Problem

check the resistance with a meter, you can probably get a decent one cheap in the sales.

if the resistance doesnt match the specs on the website you have a duff one.

Re: Air Norton Problem

I have an Air Norton installed in one of my Les Pual's (neck position) and don't get what you describe at all. It is warm and very smooth. Not brittle at all. Maybe you do have a bad pickup?

Re: Air Norton Problem

If the wiring is correct, here's an idea:

You flipped your guitar over during the process without placing a towel between your guitar and the table/bench/etc, damaging the switch.

Re: Air Norton Problem

I'll check the measurement and compare it to the website. I've tried the pickup completely isolated from the guitar wiring (i.e.) soldiered straight into the jackplug, and it still sounds off. The AN7 sounds stronger in parallel than this one does in series. I money is on a dud, but we'll find out soon lol.

If I''m wrong do you think Dimarzio will do me a custom one with ceramic magnets rather than alinco lol?

I refuse to believe that DiMarzios can be defectuous, but that's what it sounds like now. If you wired it straight into the jack and it didn't work, there's no other way to explain it.

The S version is ceramic if I'm not wrong.

I installed an Air Norton recently and haven't found it to be as you described. If you want a different magnet it's easy to do yourself. Check out my blog, I've got a heap of info on how to do it.
