anyone else have issues with dimarzio 7 string pickups

So i ordered a 7 string crunch lab and it came in dead. I sent it to dimarzio and they fixed it free of charge.

I bought a used d-sonic, installed it and nothing. It is dead. That is my fault for not checking it when i got it and waiting till after I installed it to check for continuity but still seems a little strange i get a used dead d-sonic 7 and new dead crunch lab.

I was trying to install the d-sonic 7 in a guitar that had emg 707s stock and didn't take in to account that the route for the 707 isn't as wide. I had to clip the dog ears off the pickup and make new mounting holes.

Forget trying to do anything other than direct mount with dimarzio 7 string pickups because the base is plastic and it strips super easy. I was installing a blaze in one my guitars that used pickup rings and the holes stripped almost instantly. I had to direct mount it and just keep the ring on for aesthetics.

I have been using dimarzios for almost 15 years now and never had any issues with any of their 6 string pickups. Why can't they use a metal base for the 7s and 8s and just make an active sized open face style pickup for 7 strings and 8 strings?

Dimarzio has been more than good to me over the years and taken care of the few issues i have had. I even called in one time and talked to Steve B. himself about what pickup he thought i'd like for the sound i was going for.

I just think there could be some minor improvements made.

Re: anyone else have issues with dimarzio 7 string pickups

Nothing like this - the biggest problem I've ever had with Dimarzio seven string pickups is that they don't make a PAF Pro 7.

With the D-Sonic, could that possibly have to do with the rest of the electronics? I know you're not supposed to use passive pickups with the 25k pots, but I don't know if there would be anything that would actually stop that from working.

Anyway, I've never had a totally dead Dimarzio seven string pickup.

Re: anyone else have issues with dimarzio 7 string pickups

i got new 500k cts pot which is what i normally use. my neck pickup works fine, my switch is working fine and everything else is good. It is a simple setup with only a 3 way and volume.

I have owned/installed nearly every high output 6 string dimarzio at some point and quite a few of the 7 string models as well. I have also been a tech and installed pickups in customer guitars. I even did a guitar with 3 humbuckers, a 5 way switch for each humbucker with on/off mini switches and master volume and tone. all that doesnt mean i can't mess up but the pickup is dead.

Re: anyone else have issues with dimarzio 7 string pickups

well i got board and decided to take the pickup apart and see what is going on. I took the fabric tape off and pulled all the pickup leads out take a look at them and 1 wire snapped off. It was the solid bar end/finish lead wire.

So i took the tape off the bobbins and reattached the lead to the actual pickup winding and then took a dab of superglue and glued the lead and winding back to the fabric tape still left on the bobbin.

checked it and had continuity. Sweet maybe that was my issue. I looked at the other 3 wires/connections and the finish/end lead for the hex pole side popped right off too. In the exact same spot in the exact same way. I took the tape off and did the same thing.

It works like a champ now. I got it installed and was playing in less than 5 minuets.
