Cool Combined wiring setup?

Hello everybody!

I've got this strange idea in my head, and I know it's probably stupid but I just had to ask it anyway so please be gentle with me ok ? .. hehe

Let's say I have a RG1550

Would it be possible to add a 3 way switch (still keep the std 5 way switch though) and then replace the
vol and tone pots for 2 push pull pots

and then have 2 wiring schemes at the same time (I know it's ridicilous but hear me out)
so I would setup my RG with a JEM wiring using the std component in the RG and then
by using the additional 3 way switch and the push / pull pots have a JS1200 wiring setup

So have both a JEM and a Satch wiring schemes at once
I realize I would have to have yet another switch or so to switch between the 2 wiring schemes but do you think it would be possible?

I can't get that idea out of my head ..hehehe
you all have a good one

Re: Combined wiring setup?

Seems possible to me. I don't see any glaring issues yet.

A couple observations, though:
1. The push/pulls would be active in both schemes.
2. With the 3 way scheme selected, the 5 way would still tap the pickups in position 2 and 4. So, you'd have a neck full + bridge split and a bridge full + neck split as bonus combinations.

On another note, you'd be able to have all the configurations of both guitars with any combination of 3 mini switches and/or push/pull pots. Mini switches and push/pulls are the exact same thing, just in different shells. A separate 3 way or scheme selector wouldn't be necessary.

Another option is to get a VLX91 switch and one push/pull to wire it up like an EGEN. You can add bridge & neck full on together with an additional mini switch.

Thank you very much for answering! I really do appreciate it.

So if I do the Egen18 setup I will get all those combinations?
changing my stock 5way switch to a "super switch" is that what it is? the VLX91 one?
and my volume pot to a 500k push/pull pot?

could I do a tone 500k push/pull pot to facilitate the last mode you are mentioning
re..You can add bridge & neck full on together with an additional mini switch.
or would it be to complicated?

I certainly don't mind putting in an extra mini switch .. but I don't know how to incorporate it into the wiring scheme ..?

thanks again for answering me ,, I'm glad to hear it is possible I just have to try it to be able to get it out of my system

you have a good one

Re: Combined wiring setup?

I wonder if you could have the five way switch like a JEM and use one push / pull pot for coil tapping and the other push / pull pot for turning on both humbuckers.
This way the guitar wouldn't look any different.

Sebastian!
That would be super cool ..

thanks for answering, and if you figure out how to do it I would really appreciate
if you told me

I'm not very talented when it comes to electronic stuff, but if I
get a layout or a picture I can do it

have a good one

Re: Combined wiring setup?

Well here's one idea on how to do that. You'd have to combine these two diagrams (just make one of the push/pulls the volume):

You'd end up with the 5 positions in the diagram plus:
Bridge split
Neck split
Bridge full + single
Bridge full + single + neck split
Bridge full + Neck full
Bridge split + single + neck split
Bridge split + neck split
and maybe 1 or 2 more that I'm missing
You'll also have a few duplicate positions. There will be 2 different ways to get bridge split + middle for example.

Re: Combined wiring setup?

I'd start by doing a standard JEM 5 way switch wiring and add in the coil tap for the two humbuckers.

In positions 2 and 4 the switch acts like a drain to knock off one of the coils on the humbucker, this is what you would do with the push / pull pot.

Then you would have to run a hot to the other push / pull pot and hot jumper wires to the switch where each humbucker hot is attached so it could give hot to the humbuckers even when the switch is not giving the humbuckers hot.

If you see smoke, run!

Re: Combined wiring setup?

Thanks again very much for helping me ....

I'm trying to get my head around it, I really don't know how to
hook it all up ...

I can probably find the JEM wiring on Dimarzio website but then how to figure out that additional coil tap / out of phase satriani dohickey wiring is a little to advanced for me to just figure it out

start with this right?
http://www.dimarzio.com/sites/defaul...agrams/JEM.pdf

and incorporate this
http://www.dimarzio.com/sites/defaul...200pp_mod1.pdf

?

any further help to clarify it for me would be very kind
thanks in advance

or should it be this?
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electron...h_E-Model.html

Re: Combined wiring setup?

I use stewmac too. You should also check out allparts (since the pot is out of stock at stewmac). They have a bigger selection.

Anyways, that push/pull will work. The only thing is it doesn't say whether it's audio or linear taper. I've had issues with linear taper pots used as a tone control. You'll need new knobs too since that has a splined shaft and the knobs on a 1550 fit a smooth shaft.

As far as the switch is concerned. Which wiring are you going with? I'd say the super switch is only really necessary if you're going with the EGEN wiring. Otherwise, the stock switch will be just fine. No need to replace it.

If you do need the super switch, though, you're better off getting a VLX91 from ibanezrules. That's the exact switch Ibanez uses in all their high end guitars. He'll also have smooth shaft push/pull pots (the actual JS ones).

Re: Combined wiring setup?

Would any of this be possible at all using the stock pickups V7 - S1 - V8 ? being that some humbuckers have 5 wires and those have 3 I think.. I'm not sure

I would really love to have more tonal options on this guitar

thanks again

Humbuckers typically have 4 wires--the silver is ground.
