Which Dimarzio for Charvel (Alder Body)?

New to the site. Have read lots of great info here and am happy to be a part of the community.

So I recently purchased a Ibanez rg870 but i am happy for now with the stock pups. My issue is with my Charvel Wild Card #7. It has a Seymour JB TB-4 in the bridge and it is noisy as hell...truly hate it. It also has a STK-T1 single in the neck and this pup is just plain weak.

The body of the guitar is alder, neck is maple with an ebony fret board. It has a original Floyd Rose trem/bridge. The bridge pup is also direct mount. I am playing through a Peavey 6505+, 1, 12" combo.

Now the type of tone for the bridge pup i am looking for is Nuno Bettencourt's rhythm/lead tone from the Extreme album Pornografitti. I also would like to get a bit of a Satrianni lead tone.

For the neck pup, i am looking for a single that has a humbucker type tone, similar to Satrianni's tone.

I realize that Nuno generally uses Bill Lawrence pups but i think that they would sound too thin in an alder body guitar. Also, i have never had any Dimarzio's in any of my guitars and really want to go with Dimarzio this time around.

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I love the Tone Zone in alder, I'd definitely check that out. Big fat and heavy, but still cuts through.

I like the TZ too but not much difference from the JB as far as extra "noise" (Hotter than JB and hard to control at times when playing loud)
A very hot, fat Dimarzio is the Breed. Not noisy at all. Hot but retains the PAF feel.

You know the Nuno Bettencourt sig guitars are alder bodied, right? At least the N4VINTAGE is.

If you want that tone, the Bill Lawrence would still seem to be the way to go.

Welcome to Jemsite JP!!

Trying to nail Nuno's sound is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.......LOL

Nuno uses a TON of pre-amp gain and a lot of FX in the signal path. I don't know what your using for pedals (thanks for reading the sticky BTW). If you have a TS-9 distortion pedal, I would use either a MegaDrive (DP107) for Nunos slightly scooped sound or the SD-3 (DP152) in the bridge. The DP-107 will get you the closest but it has to be special ordered- they're only made on request. Here are some specs on the 107:

The MegaDrive™ (DP107) is still available in all colors and both spacings. However, it is similar in output and overall tone to the Steve's Special™, which is the main reason we no longer list it. The major difference is that the MegaDrive™ has a little more bass and midrange response, and the Steve's Special™ is a little more open-sounding. MegaDrive™ specs are: output 350mv., treble-6, midrange-5, bass-7, D.C. resistance 15.03K.

Your going to want a Pro-track (DP-188 ) in the neck for it's even response. It's the closest match to a PAF-Joe/Paf-Pro in a single space. It's fairly high output, so you'll have to play with the height a little to get a good balance with the bridge. It's a great sounding pup when split as well.

Thank you all for your responses.

Although i know that it is quite difficult to get Nuno's tone per say, i am simply looking to get somewhere in the ballpark with his tone. I like the low end he gets in rhythms and the clean highs he gets in his solos.

The MegaDrive is your answer. If you buy one and don't like it, I'll buy it off of you for whatever price you paid.....that's how sure I am.

F-spaced for guitars that don't have a vintage spaced tune-o-matic or similar.

F spaced for Fender originally - Floyds are based off Fender spacing.
