Dimarzio Evo with a Alnico 8 Magnet Rocks

Hey Guys,

Just thought I'd share.. I read a while back Evo's with Alinco 8 magnets were "Dream Sexy" as one guy put it. I finally got around to doing a major service and some upgrades on my Jem 555, and man "Dream Sexy" is about right.. At the first chord I hit on the bridge pickup I thought "Wow!' It still kept the stupidly high gain, no more top end C8 harshness and without losing top end, harmonics sounded better, and the tone all round just sounded lush

The neck pickup.. hmmm I've never been happy with the Evo neck in that guitar, and I think the Alnico 8 gives it even more output as the original C8 magnet was not a thick distortion one. It still sounds a little dark and muddy for me. The coil split sounds good though. Any thoughts on this??? I Know changing a JB from a A5 to a A8 took out the high end harshness, and I don't mind losing some output here. A5 in there maybe?

BTW it looks like my Evo's were potted in some kinda rubbery glue ( or the magnets glued in ) which made them a little harder than usual to open and get the magnets out but it wasn't a real drama.

If you have an Evo bridge I would highly recommend trying the swap

Re: Dimarzio Evo with a Alnico 8 Magnet Rocks

The Evo bridge model is one of my favorite pickups, nice to know that an A8 magent will smooth everthing out but keep the best traits of it.

I've done some magnet swap experiments on other puckups and I've liked the changes an A8 magnet makes. To me A8's are like A2's on steroids having the same sweet tone but more output. I wonder how an Alnico 9 would sound in an Evo? I think an A9 is a mix of the best qualities of an A8 and C8 magnet, it might sound pretty sweet in one. I have a spare evo pup laying around, I think I may try out an A8 & A9 magnet in it when I go to put in in something.

I like the evo pup as is and the evo neck is one of my favorite neck pickups. I am interested in the magnet swap but I'm happy with my evos in a mahogany body RGR580
