Re: which do you prefer in your IBANEZ? duncan or dimarzio?

I've always liked Dimarzios much better in alder or basswood. Duncans make decent LP replacement pups but only when Gibson does not make a pickup like how you want and they are decent in mahogany bodies but lately I am not liking the sound of Duncans at all - too muddy and lacking mids.

What I find is that most the killer tones on alder/basswood are usually Dimarzios these days, but Gary Schutt had a RG with a Duncan Distortion and got great tone from that thing that I was sure was a Tone Zone, so anything is possible...

Yeah, I prefer Duncans for vintage type PAF sounds for my PRS and Les Paul type guitars (mahogany). But as far as Ibanez's or Jackson's or any other guitar associated with metal or shredding, I go with DiMarzios. They cut through better and have that nice punchy sound and articulation for high speed playing.

I once played with duncans on my Ibanez, but I didn't like the sound. It was some kind of "buzzy"... I now use Dimarzio Breed..

Re: which do you prefer in your IBANEZ? duncan or dimarzio?

I generally prefer the Dimarzios.

Have used the Tonezone (bit too fat for me), Evo (amazing, but sometimes a bit shrill), Evo 2 (NICE!), PAF Pro (Nice, but just a bit spongy on low-end), Fred (nice, but sometimes a little too modern sounding).
Also tried EMG 81/85 (powerful and articulate, but outright sterile).

I am now testing a Screamin' Demon. It is quite nice, sounding PAF'ish and moderately warm. It is punchy and fairly bright with good harmonics. Tone is pretty balanced, and it is articulate. Very crunchy.

So far, the Evo 2, PAF Pro and the Screamin' Demon are my favorites.
