EMG 81 sound alike

What passive pickup sounds similar to an EMG 81? What about the 85? I have an 560 with a PAF pro. I like it but my ears really prefer EMGS. I do not want to swap out the whole deal if I dont have to.

Duncan?
Dimarzio?

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking about getting a D-Activator 7 Neck for my 321. I'll post some clips if I get around to it. Don't get EMGs

Whats the big deal with swapping everything out, you get everything you need in the EMG kit.

Yeah, actually isn't it actually less work? You know, with their quick connect and all.

Re: EMG 81 sound alike

The quick connect doesn't save you any work unless you are switching between different EMGs. The wires still need to be soldered to the pots, the clip is just on the pickup end. If you are really lazy you could say the quick connect is more work because the wires are already attached on other pickups and you may need to take 2 seconds to plug the quick connect ends into the pickup.

Im only switching a humbucker. I am not interested in switching over right now. I just need a 81 sound alike in passive. Anyone? Is the D activator it???

I think D Activators sound good, but to my ears, they don't sound like EMGs, but I'm so used to playing EMGs with 18V.

Re: EMG 81 sound alike

WOW I guess of all the hundreds of different pickups only the D activator will work. Guess I'll just wait for the extra cash and get a whole emg set.

Re: EMG 81 sound alike

hey Ibanut, like stated by jax, D-Activator's don't "sound" quite like an EMG although it is the closest to one except it doesn't have that "metallic" tone actives have. Not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing but after getting one to replace an Evo7, the tone's "brighter", responses like an EMG, and not "compressed" as it can pick-up soft or loud notes and it comes through... I don't remember playing an EMG that responds well to pick dynamics. Also, due to the "hi-gain" nature of the p/u, ground noise becomes more apparant; EMG's don't have that problem.
In all essence, the D-Activator is like a PAF with the attitude of an EMG. Otherwise, go with the EMG's if you really like THAT sound.
