Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

Getting ready to buy the pups for my next project. I've played the Evolution, and HOLY LOUD! The Evo2 was much more my style. Still thick in the mids but not screechingly so like the Evo. Both forced me to be a better player, which I hated at 1st, but grew to appreciate. I never found a perfect neck companion to the Evo2 however. For the next axe which will of course be a one-off Custom JEM tribute, I'm looking hard at a full set of Gravity Storms.

I know it's hard to describe sounds, but DiMarzio's description is the closest thing to gibberish I've seen in a description. WTF is a thundering cloud of ice cream? Anyhoo, I know you guys have played them and some have played both. I've read the reviews but as it applies to my personal style, I'm kinda stuck between the two and I'm tired of flip-flopping.

I play with a good bit of chorus, both clean and distorted, tight delay, and sometimes phased. Lots of octave chords and artificial harmonics with minimal shred. The closest example of the sound I go for stylistically would be "Rhinoceros" by the Smashing Pumpkins on the "Gish" album. That's the best way I know to describe it.

So, between the Evo2 and GS, which pup would you think fits the bill better? And if it's the Evo2, what mid/neck combo would you recommend? Thanks!

What amp do you use?
That missing info plays a big part here....

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

I have all three sets of pickups you're talking about.
Personally I like the EVO2 better than the EVO1 and the Gravity Storm set.

The EVO1 has too much treble / highs.
The Gravity Storm has the opposite problem, not enough highs and it's a touch muddy.

The EVO2 is a nice balance between highs and output.

I'm not a Smashing Pumpkins fan so I Youtubed the song, Grunge Tone!

You said you want less mids? Humm...

Try the Steve's Special!

It has a balanced amount of highs with some kick'n lows and less mids.

I have one in my JEM777VDY.

Options for neck pickups-

The Air Norton is the obvious choice, they work well together.

If you don't like them, Dimarzio will exchange them for a different set of pickups of equal value within the first 30 days.

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

Sorry, Sansamp PSA-1 for recording on the PC. No, I love the mids! The original Evo was just over the top with them.

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

Then go with the EVO2; it's my favorite 6 string Dimarzio pickup.
I have a lot of different Dimarzio pickups in many guitars.

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

Thanks Seb! Do you like the Air Norton with the Evo2? And what about middle?

AN is great with an Evo2...and HS3 middle.

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

The HS-3 doesn't have enough output to keep up with the EVO2.
I like the Fast Track-1 and the Pro Track.
They both have a lot of output and still sound Strat like.

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

Neither come in chrome

Any opinions on the injector as a hotter mid?

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

I bought the Injector Neck to go with my Gravity Storms funny that you mention it.
I don't like it-
It has enough output, just not the Strat like tone I was expecting.

I use Fender Texas Specials for middle pickup in a lot of my guitars.
I bet you could get a chrome cover for that.

My JEM7VWH has an EVO2 and EVO Neck with the Texas Special in the middle and it's a great match for the set of EVOs.

As soon as I flip to the middle pickup it's like, "SRV has entered the building!"

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

My combo on a RG550 is: EVO2 - virtual 2 middle (DP408 called now Virtual Vintage® 54 Pro) - Paf Joe with a standard 5-way switch with no coil split.

The DP408 is connected like this: green as hot et red to ground.

The output of the DP408 is not that low compare to the EVO2, and the 2 and 4 positions are also great!

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

I should add that the tone cap is 16nF, not 22nf. This makes the overall tone a bit warmer.

Yo AlaskaBat, everybody and their mom likes the Air Norton In the Neck, me included. But I stumbled upon the Billy Corgan BC-1 neck pup a while ago and its worth mentioning here, combined with the EVO-2 bridge and FastTrack-1 mid. If you ever get the chance to get your hands on one, pls do so. They have a fatter sound than the AN when soloing, and when playing clean chords they get a nice fat chunky grungy tone.....

Re: Evo2 vs. Gravity Storm

Finally got to test them and I'm apparently one of the sheep who prefers the Air Norton. It's hard to describe, but the tone doesn't lose the "edge" when switching off of the bridge like others I tried. The BC-1 is an interesting idea, but it's a bit much as a mid in HSH config.

So for the time being, it's Evo2-INFS1-Air Norton. Seb, a few people suggested the Texas Specials, however, they didn't seem to fit the character of the DiMarzios. It wasn't bad, just not quite me. I'm probably trying out a SD Hot Stack if I can find one nearby.
