F Spaced pickup or Standard for neck of RG550

Basic question but couldn't find previous threads on it.

I'm going to put gravity storms in the bridge and neck of my 1987 RG550.

From what I read I need F spaced size for the bridge, correct?

I've seen different opinions on the neck, with some saying standard instead of F.

Any quick feedback appreciated.

Thank you.

PS, I never use the middle single coil so was keeping stock PU there. If not any recommendations?

Re: F Spaced pickup or Standard for neck of RG550

F-spaced bridge pickup is wider then non F-spaced humbucker because Fender tremolo's string spacing is wider then Gibson style bridge string spacing. ( Fender spaced - F-spaced).

And neck position humbucker is usually not F-spaced, because neck string spacing is narrower then bridge string spacing anyway.

Actually, most people( in Seymour Duncan forum for example), think that there is no difference in sound between F-spaced and non F-spaced humbuckers. It is matter of string alignment with pickup poles. (And you can have blade pickup with no poles)

So in frankenstrat Van Halen put ordinary non F-spaced pickup in bridge position, ( there were not F-spaced pickups back then),
and Steve Vai, if I remember correctly, has bridge F-spaced pickup in neck position.

So there is no rule, just look for sound you like.

I don't think you will hear much difference, but I'd choose the F-spaced version, simply because it exists.
I have both F-spaced Gravity Storms in my 1991 RG550 and the neck HB fits as good as the bridge HB. Especially the neck sounds awesome.
I have an Evo single in it and it works really nice with the humbuckers.

Cheers.

Fantastic! Thank you.

With the EVO single coil in the middle is it wired so that the 2 and 4 positions use a single coil of the humbucker and the EVO?

Exactly. I use it in the standard Jem/RG wiring with the inner coils and single coil in 2 & 4.

One last Q for you or anyone else. I see on the DiMarzio website they make Gravity Storms in many different colors. Unfortunately can only find "black" at most of the online sellers.

Any recommendation where to buy a set in some of the many colors available?

most of the time you have to special order the bright colors. I have had great luck going through sam ash in the past.

You can check for sellers on the bay, or like noted above, special order from Dimarzio.

To answer your first question, if your guitar has a 43mm nut and F spacing at the bridge, Dimarzio recommends F-spaced in both bridge and neck positions. Most people, myself included, don't think it matters for the neck - but aesthetically, having both F-spaced looks better.. Almost all RGs will take F-spaced bridge because of their wide spacing. I believe Prestiges come with both pickups F-spaced from factory.

banjomikez on [email protected] has a huge selection of pickups - he has gravity storm pups available in different colors...and he sends free swag with every order. I've ordered pickups from hims several times and the service was good. You should definitely check out his [email protected] site.

All my RGs are loaded with DiMarzio. And all of them have F-spaced bridge AND neck pickups!
So, there... order F-spaced.

Yeah! I've had quite a few custom pickups ordered from Mike. He definitely kicks some serious butt!
