Fred vs EMG's

Hey what's up guys. I just was wondering what I should do. I just installed a set of EMG 81's in my friend's JS100 and they sound pretty darn good. I also love Satriani's sound. My question is what pickups would be good to go back and forth between a Satriani/bluesy type sound but then go to being a metal beast? Can the Fred do that? Will an EMG 81/85 do that? hmmmm.... just curious.

Re: Fred vs EMG's

The fred is not nearly as hot as the EMGs. I think if you slide the volume down a little bit on the emgs then it will be fine for blues. But for metal, the fred will just not come through.

Re: Fred vs EMG's

I agree, the Fred is a pretty mellow pup. Well, for metal anyway. You know what you'd be better off with? Two 85's. Seriously, the extra mids are killer for the blues sound and they make the screams jump out of the guitar so easily it's ridiculous. If I was looking for a metal guitar that could cool down a bit I'd definately go with two 85's. And trust me, I've had 85's and 81's in both positions.
