Help with AH4 humbucker wiring colors

I'm replacing my wife's AH4 humbucker in her SA160 tonight with a Bill Lawrence (Bill&Becky) XL 500L. When I try to look up the wiring it's a bit confusing.

I have the SA160 diagram, and assuming it's correct (not sure of her model year, but it's purple sparkle), her guitar has an AH4:

The diagram I found for the lawrences doesn't appear to be right for their Ibanez example:

http://www.guitarelectronics.com/cat...g_color_codes/

So I'm not sure I should trust it.

Any thoughts on the right way to wire these up? The Iby diagram says nothing about hotness or south pole or any of that stuff. LOL

Thanks!

Bill

Re: Help with AH4 humbucker wiring colors

the AH4's white is hot. So the BL's red wire will go where the white wire from the AH4 goes.

The BL's green AND white will go where the red wire from the AH4 goes.

Awesome thanks!

and if I ever wanted to coil split it??

(still working out whether a push pull pot can fit in the SA cavity).

Much appreciated.

Re: Help with AH4 humbucker wiring colors

the bridge is split in position 4 of the wiring diagram. So the switch is splitting the pickup already.

If you wanted to split it independently of the 5 way, it is really easy. Like you said you'd just need a push/pull pot or you could do a mini-toggle but that would mean you would have to drill a new hole in the cavity.

Actually, that link I sent you to did indeed end up being wrong (or maybe it means Bill Lawrence USA rather than B&B). For the sake of science and Google, I figured I'd better report back before somebody sees it and does it wrong.

From http://wildepickups.com/Wiring___Tech_Info.html :

"All Pickups with White/Black/Red/Green/Blue Wires

White Wire -- Hot

Black/Blue Wires -- Ground

Red/Green Wires -- Twist together, insulate with shrink wrap or electrical tape for humbucking OR solder to either a push/pull or on/off switch for split coil."

That's exactly what I ended up with. I also find it interesting that they can't be bothered to tell you which wire goes to which coil.

Oh really? Wow. I wonder how I'd pull that off with this cthulu of wiring I have going on.

Re: Help with AH4 humbucker wiring colors

I ended up screwing this up my first try, probably due to a bad solder joint. In the interest of not cross posting, if anybody wants to take a look, I already posted about it here:

Thanks!

Re: Help with AH4 humbucker wiring colors

I realize, after reading around a bit, I only twisted the ends of the red and green wires together. Did they want me to twist them all the way up to the pickup? I read somewhere that untwisted pairs can cause hum. I also didn't insulate because only the ends that hit the solder point were exposed. Could it be a case of me not following directions?

Re: Help with AH4 humbucker wiring colors

no your coil tap wires just need to be soldered together and then soldered to the switch.

You don't even have to twist them together.

so for the right color wires.

your AH4

WHITE : HOT
RED : COIL TAP
Bare : Ground

the BL

White : Hot
RED AND GREEN: COIL TAP
BLACK, BLUE AND Bare : ground

Oh I gave up on that for the moment. Right now I'm just trying to get it so the guitar doesn't sound like crap in regular humbucker mode. That's what I was talking about when I mentioned the wire twisting.

I did it as a surprise for my wife, and needless to say she's gonna be SUPER surprised when she goes to play Rocksmith and she can't even hear herself hitting the strings.
