HSH conversion to HH

Help!

So, I have an Ibanez RG1EX5.

Indo manufactured. Flat black, chrome logo, grey abalone shark tooth, HSH INFs, and EDGE III.

Sweet looking but needs everything replaced out.

Just took the EDGE III out and installed a Ibanez Edge Pro.

Replaced the Bridge INF with a Seymour Duncan Invader.

After being super confused about the different color code between Ibanez INF and the Seymour Duncan, I believe I got something to work right lol.

But I made the mistake of yanking out the single coil before figuring out how to route the signal 'dead".

The Single coil INF only had one point of attachment to the 5 way switch.

A black wire.

Now of course, my options with the 5 way switch are: Neck, Neck+static, static, Bridge+static, or Bridge lol.

How the heck do I finish converting a former HSH, to a simple HH configuration?

I would even be happy with two positions out of the 5 way. All Neck or all Bridge. With a "Kill switch' center.

Re: HSH conversion to HH

my Rg520 has a 5 way.
Is that what you mean, hh with a 5 way? And are you wanting to know how to wire it it?

Re: HSH conversion to HH

This guitar is HSH, all wired up to the 5 way.

I removed the S. And so the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions on my 5 way are not working because they relied on the S for those positions to work.

So there is a way, to only have the 1st and last position of the 5 way work, while the other 3 positions are 'dead'.

Meaning that either the Neck 100% will be on in 1st position or the Bridge will be 100% in the 5th position, but everything else has been 'killed'.

Re: HSH conversion to HH

One of my guitars went through the same conversion you're trying to do, and now the 5-way switch is wired like this:

bridge / bridge, inner coil / both inner coils / neck, inner coil / neck

but I never use the split positions.

Re: HSH conversion to HH

Take a short cable and solder one end to where you have removed the S and the other side to ground (back of one pot). This way the signal goes to ground / is dead for positions 2,3,4.

Cheers.

Re: HSH conversion to HH

Im sure you could have a lot of options with what you have right now....
you could have them all on, all spilt, either one split....etc
I would look on the Ibanez site for stock setups and go with that or try custom setup.
good luck

Re: HSH conversion to HH

Hey Strobo,

I followed Jemerators advice (thanks for the advice). I grounded the central 3 positions. As I don't use them, after 25 years of playing. I doubt I will start lol.

I also followed up his advice, by trying to learn more about electronics as well as shielding and 'grounding'.

I'm considering also "killing" the neck pickup, as its horrid and will never be used.

Plus you literally can use this setup for kill switch effects. Though the 5 way, needs to be replaced, as this stock Indo part is trash.

HH has always been my preferred pickup combination, as "Singles" have to much "hum" for the type of music I play. And at times, can get in the way of picking, depending upon the music.

The "Invader" I installed, is the best passive high output pickup for me.
It has such a range of sounds you can get out of it, including a very clear and crisp 'acoustic' electric sound, or using the tone control, you can get a 'neck' pickup sound.

Ive used it for almost a decade, so I have had along time to play with it.

It's in my RG 320dxqm Korean (Floyd rose special trem) and the Indo RG 5ex1 (Edge Pro trem).

The "Tone Zone" from Dimarzio in my Prestige RG (Edge Zero trem), has took along time for me to get the right sound out of it. And I still may replace it. But I lowered it, but than boosted the poles high. Which seems to cut the 'bass' a bit, and boost the 'highs', and it balanced out its sound, so its no longer 'muddy'.

There is one neck pickup I really like but I don't think it would mix well with the Seymour Invader, and that's the "Air Norton" by Dimarzio.

Wondering what the "Black Winter" by Seymour sounds like.

My buddy has a GIO also, but instead of moding it, I think he is going to get an RG.

Re: HSH conversion to HH

Yeah man, the RG 5EX1 is very sharp with its Flat Black or Pewter paint job.

It came with the Edge 3 like your GIO, but as mentioned, I just installed an Edge Pro.

I am really liking the Zero Edge 2 on my new Premium RG so far.

So what do you think about the EVO? I have heard good things about it and I really want to try it.
